US Bank makes donation to Garrison Library

US Bancorp Foundation awards $1,000.00 to the Garrison Library Rebuilding Fund.  Jon Kremer, Market President US Bank, awards a $1,000.00 check to Christy Leckbend and Betty Hendryx from the Garrison Library Board.  The Garrison Library Rebuilding Fund was started after the wind storm from July 11, 2011 destroyed the towns library.

VU lighting contest continues

This display on Scenic Drive is one of the entries in the VU lighting contest. Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Vinton Unlimited is promoting the City of Lights this holiday season by giving away $50 in Vinton Value Dollars to three lucky winners who have lights on display. A few of the homes already entered include 611 West 5th Street, with 4,500 lights on display; 1102 1st Ave with over 2,500 lights on display and 130 Scenic Driver with over 1,000 lights on display.

Despite snow, more than 100 compete in 9th Annual Tour De Lights 5K

Scott Wirth was the overall winner of the 9th annual Tour De Lights VSHS track/XC fund-raising 5K. Somewhere in a closet or storage bin, Vinton-Shellsburg Cross Country Coach John Frazier has eight similar but different T-shirts, one from each of the first eight annual Tour de Lights fund-raising 5K race. Next year, the 2014 Tour De Lights T-shirt will join the 2013 version (blue with a snowman in a Santa's hat, running under the well-known Vinton street lamps).

Breakfast with Santa offers food, photo sessions

The Johnson children with Santa. For twenty years or so, Santa has been sharing breakfast with Vinton area children. This year, he met them at the Skate Center, where many families enjoyed a breakfast of pancakes and eggs and ham, before the children lined up to have their photos taken and receive a gift bag.  The Vinton Parks and Recreation Department helps Santa organize the event each year.

A salute to Pearl Harbor; teacher leads annual memorial

Veterans salute as Taps is played to honor those who died at Pearl Harbor. Veterans joined Vinton-Shellsurg Middle School History Teacher Alex Vasquez and several students for the annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Saturday in the VSMS library. Mr. Vasquez briefly summarized the events leading up to the beginning of World War II, and shared some details of the attack. A moment of silence honored those who died that day, including the 1,117 sailors who were lost on the USS Arizona.

Local project among eight watershed demonstration efforts

DES MOINES –Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today announced that eight watershed demonstration projects have been selected to receive $4.1 million in funding through the Iowa water quality initiative over the next three years.  In addition to the state funds, the eight projects will provide over $8 million in matching funds to support water quality improvement efforts.

VU Board to elect four members; candidates sought

Voyagers dance again at VS

Voyagers perform their routine during halftime Tuesday; they compete this week at State. Three years after budget constraints compelled Vinton-Shellsburg administrators to temporarily cut funding for the VSHS Voyagers dance team, the Voyagers are back. Coach Melanie Davis and seven dancers have been working on their routine in preparation for this week's State contest. The girls will perform at 11:35 a.m. tomorrow in Hy-Vee Hall.

FSB makes $500 Donation to Benton County Food Pantry
