IBSSS project to feature modern simulated slate composite roofing
From a distance; the completed parts of the new roof of the Iowa Braille School look similar to the slate surface that originally protected the buildings from the elements.
But take a closer look, and you will see that the blue-grey shingles are not made from slate or asphalt, but a composite plastic/ruber compound. These Eco Star simulated slate shingles come with a 50-year warranty and are designed to resist hail as well as wind.
i-Farmer: Old School Produce owner Elwick relies on 21st Century technology
Mike Elwick's wife, Cindy, like her late father, Jay Bolin, is a life-long gardener.
But, says Mike, all those years of watching Cindy and Jay work in the dirt -- and all the produce that they grew and he ate -- taught him virtually nothing about gardening.
So when what Mike calls his "hare-brained" idea of turning the old West school building and playground on West 8th Street into The Old School Produce company with a football field-sized garden came to him, Mike began a crash course in gardening.

“I wish the river would go down,” said Randall.
Water from the Cedar River nearly reached the band shell during flooding three weeks ago.
VS Board considers adding bowling as school sport
Jordan Schottmer began bowling at the age of 2 – when he was big enough to pick up a bowling ball, says his father, Kipp.
Now, as he enters ninth grade, Jordan, who has been bowling competitively since age 7, has a good chance to compete for his high school.
The Vinton-Shellsburg School Board heard a presentation from Michelle Gosse, the mom of bowlers Jared and Jacob, on Monday evening.
