Vinton Lions invest new members, install new officers

These Lion will serve as club officers for the coming year. Vinton Lions installed officers and welcomed three new members at their June 27 meeting. The local Lions service club is affiliated with Lions Clubs International and their mission of empowering volunteers to "serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding." The club has carried out Lions Kids' Sight vision screening locally since 2004 in conjunction with University of Iowa Hospitals and clinics.

Above the Influence Coalition plans alcohol server training June 30 in Urbana

  The Benton County Above the Influence Coalition will host Training for Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS) sessions at the O-Zone in Urbana on June 30th, 2013 as part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) project. ASAC’s SPF SIG project is funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.

Vinton couple injured in Fayette County motorcycle accident

Rural Vinton residents and former Vinton jewelry store owners Steve and Teri Copler suffered minor injuries in a motorcycle accident in northern Fayette County last weekend. According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office,  Steven Copler was driving a 2008 Harley-Davidson eastbound on Kornhill Road near Wadena when he lost control at around 1:15 p.

Medallion Hunt continues; clue to be offered if Grand Medallion not found

All seven of the medallions have been located, but the Grand Medallion has not yet been found. The first seven clues give some hints, but if the Grand Medallion is not found by tonight (Thursday) a clue will be given at the courthouse tonight at approximately 7:00 p.m. Clue No. 7 in the VPRD Party in the Park Medallion Hunt was: Rockin’ Pneumonia & the Boogie Woogie Flu.

City lists street construction projects planned this year in Vinton

The City of Vinton would like to send out this notice of street projects that will be happening this summer and fall. Since some of these projects are occurring on busy streets, please be prepared to either detour or drive more slowly during in these construction areas. * IDOT Overlay on Highway 150: Anyone who has traveled the portion of Highway 150 north from 4th Street to 3rd Street and continuing east from C Avenue to 1st Avenue will tell you that this portion of the highway is in need of some significant maintenance.

Community Health Needs Assessment

Comm. Health Needs Assessment In 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed by congress which included many provisions including a requirement for not-for-profit hospitals to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) every three years. Due to this,Linn County Public Health (LCPH) facilitated a CHNA for St. Luke’s Hospital and Mercy Medical Center to support these new PPACA requirements.

Middle school tile project requires asbestos removal

Some alert Vinton Today readers have observed some unusual work in progress at the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School. Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock explains that what people are seeing is the complicated process required by law when removing material believed to contain asbestos.  "We want to replace the tile on the first floor, so we had to have the old tile abated since we know it has asbestos in it," said the Superintendent.

Belle Plaine man, 56 pronounced dead after Highway 30 accident

Tony Ray Yerkes,56, of Belle Plaine, died in a one vehicle accident on Highway 30, on Tuesday, June 25.  According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Yerkes was westbound on Highway 30, about four miles north of Norway, at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons, striking a field drive and coming to rest in a farm field.

Erin Randall receives IWGA Ann Griffel Scholarship

The Iowa Golf Association is pleased to announce that Erin Randall of Vinton is a 2013 winner of the IWGA Ann Griffel Scholarship award. Erin has had an active high school career in academics, athletics, church, and volunteering. Academically she has won numerous awards through the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union and was a member of the National Honor Society.
