A sign just to the west of the Shellsburg American Legion building announces that the grassy area is the future site of the Benton County Freedom Rock.
The Freedom Rock is a painting project by Iowan Ray "Bubba" Sorenson II. There is one large rock that Sorenson repaints each year with a variety of patriotic and military thimes, along with smaller rocks in several counties in Iowa.
The Shellsburg American Legion Riders are organizing a burger bar fund-raiser for Friday, April 17, to raise money to pay for the Benton County Freedom Rock. The event takes place from 5-8 p.m. at the Shellsburg Legion Hall. Cost of the meals, which include homemade salads and beverage, is $9 for hamburger meals and $6 for hot dog meals.
The Legion Riders have formed a committee for the Freedom Rock project. They've found the rock they want to use, and are in the process of securing equipment to move it. The group plans to share more information in the near future.
