A press release this morning from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation confirms that the woman whose body was found on 59th Street Trail on Sunday was murdered.
Officers have not released the name of the victim, or issued any information yet on the suspect or any arrests, although they have said the incident poses no public safety concerns for area resident.
Along with the DCI, the Benton County Sheriff's department and other law are on the scene just east of 32nd Avenue, a few miles north of Shellsburg on the black top leading to Urbana.
The DCI press release states: On October 25, 2015 at approximately 11:51 AM, Benton County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a nonresponsive female lying in the driveway of 3257 59th Street Trail Lot #4 Shellsburg, Iowa. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a white female deceased from injuries sustained from suspected foul play. The name of the decedent is being withheld pending notification of family members.
Authorities have also linked the murder to reports of vehicles stolen in the area, according to witnesses.
A Vinton resident who owns property in that area said that he had planned to spend part of Sunday hunting, but could not because of the incident.
