Nick Stein’s previous two-game total in high school bowling competitions was 461 – enough to barely win the championship in Monday’s individual bowling in the Class 1A State meet.
But Stein, a Vinton-Shellsburg senior, didn’t bowl a 461 at State. Instead, he improved his own personal best by 52 pins, ending his high school career by rolling a 246/267/513 to take the individual title and lead the Viking bowlers to the team championship.
The Vikings won the Class 1A State team title with a score of 3,141 -- 79 pins higher than second-place LaMars.
Heading into the baker games, when each team member bowls two of the 10 frames, the Vikings had just an 11-point lead over the second-place team. The third-place team was just 13 behind.
But the guys rolled one of their best baker rounds, staying at 200 or above for all five games (211, 206, 224, 200 and 259) to hold on to the top spot and even increase their final margin of victory.
“We just meshed together as a team,” said Coach Amber Pattee, who said that as a team the Vikings scored about 300 pins higher at State than they did at the qualifying meet in Vinton a week earlier.
Stein's performance, said Pattee, was "outstanding."
Stein said he believed being more focused was the key to his success on Monday.
In the girls' event, Vikette Alyssa Bunge finished in 6th place in individual scoring, with a total of 418.
Bunge rolled a 187 in the first game – close to her average. But she said something didn’t seem quite right, so she changed balls.
She rolled a 231 in the second game to earn a 6th place finish.
The bowling teams will wrap up their season with a banquet at Berry's Lanes on a future Sunday evening.
