News : Every VS band family helps with annual Soup Supper

While their parents helped with the Soup Supper, VSHS pep band members rehearse before the game.

Several area business donate items for the VSHS Band Booster Soup Supper.

Students Erin Spangler and Cassie Alderson sold VSHS spirit flags at the Band Booster Soup Supper.

For the Vinton-Shellsburg band students, from 6-12th grade, participating in band is a family effort.

"Every band family is responsible for selling six tickets and for bringing two pies," says Nancy Jorgensen, who who has been a VS band mom for several years.

Hundreds of people filled the VSHS cafeteria Friday night for the annual event. Band director Karl Smith was busy too, practicing with the pep band which plays for home games.

Smith said on Friday evening that he had yet to tally the total, but added that the turnout seemed to be the best ever.

"We were down to eight pieces of pie left," he said.

Several area businesses also donated items for the event. They were honored with a display listing their store name and contribution. Some VSHS students also sold spirit flags. This fund-raiser helps with Prom expenses. The flags are available at the high school as well as high school events for $15.
