After getting just a couple hours of sleep Saturday morning, 2011 Vinton-Shellsburg Prom Queen Shelby Beyer woke up to get dressed up again to receive another honor. She traveled to Des Moines, where she was honored as one of the Governor's Scholars of 2011.
Below is some information sent from VSHS Principal Kirk Johnson about that honor. Also, Ian Storey will represent VInton-Shellsburg in the KWWL-TV Best of Class.
GOVERNOR’S SCHOLAR:
This April the 8th Annual Governor's Scholar Recognition Ceremony was held at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.
The recognition program is a combined effort on behalf of the Governor's Office, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
The seniors were selected by their high schools as the highest academic achievers. In addition, the students' parents and favorite or most influential teacher are among the invited guests. Each student will receive a photo plaque and a certificate to commemorate their achievement. The selected teachers will also receive a certificate.
This year’s Vinton-Shellsburg Governor’s Scholar recipient is: Shelby Beyer (daughter of Ken & Dawn Beyer), she selected Brendan Knudtson as her most influential teacher.

KWWL – “BEST OF CLASS”:
Some of the best and brightest students from 120 high schools in Iowa and southwest Wisconsin were honored by KWWL Television on May 1st at Wartburg College. The students took part in KWWL’s 27th annual “Best of the Class” celebration.
Best of the Class students were videotaped for a series of public service announcements, which will air from May 11 through June on KWWL. The students also had the opportunity to be photographed with KWWL news anchors Ron Steele and Tara Thomas. In its 27 years of recognizing academic excellence, KWWL’s Best of the Class has honored more than 3,000 top graduating seniors. Best of the Class is a joint public service/community relations effort that encourages academic excellence among high school students by honoring students who serve as role models in their communities.
