LA PORTE CITY - George Henry "Chub" Dunkelberger, 95, of La Porte City, died Monday, May 19, 2014, at Windsor Manor in Vinton due to complications of age.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014, at First Christian Church in Vinton with Rev. Connie Wacht officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery, La Porte City.
Chub was born July 3, 1918, in rural La Porte City, Iowa, the son of Alvin Edward and Eva Marie Mengel Dunkelberger. He attended country school.
On June 19, 1946, he was united in marriage with Beatrice Evelyn Elliott in Freeport, Illinois. The two made their home together in rural La Porte City on their farm. She preceded him in death on February 14, 2009.
Chub was a member of First Christian Church in Vinton. He enjoyed playing practical jokes, playing pool, reading the paper and listening to the radio. His greatest joy was his family.
Chub is survived by one son, Alvin G. Dunkelberger and his wife Wendy of La Porte City; one daughter, Sharon Grams and her husband Jim of Hudson; one brother, Ralph (Gloria) Dunkelberger of La Porte City; two sisters: Ella Feller and Alvina Koepke, both of Denver; six grandchildren: Jeff (Tammi) Grams of Hudson; Tracy (Dave) Eastman of Platte City, MO; Angie (Jeff) Hutton of Mt. Auburn; Dena Dunkelberger of La Porte City; Dawn (Heath) Markland of Mt. Auburn; and Gail (Scott) Wood of Vinton; 11 great-grandchildren: Lauren (Cody O’Connor) Grams of Waterloo; Michael and Madisen Grams of Hudson; Sydney, Joshua and Jacob Eastman of Platte City, MO; Kayla Hutton of Westchester, IL; Dani Hutton of Mt. Auburn; Josef (Cait) Slocum of Atlanta, GA; and Lyndsay Dunkelberger and Ripley Markland, both of Mt. Auburn; 4 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Bea; one son, John R. "Jack" Shatzer; daughter-in-law, Nancy Shatzer; one brother, Archie Dunkelberger; two sisters, Vera Palmer and Betty Bristow; four brothers-in-law, Glenn Koepke, Glen Palmer, Roy Bristow and Duane Feller; sister-in-law Joan Dunkelberger; and one granddaughter, Julie Grams.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the La Porte City Fire Department. Chub and Bea were so grateful for their assistance when needed.
The family would like to thank the staff at Windsor Manor and Hospice Compassus for their dedication to Chub’s care. They had a great love for him, and it showed in their excellent care.
