CEDAR FALLS: Gary H. Demmel, 67, formerly of Vinton, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Cedar Valley Hospice House in Waterloo following a long battle with cancer.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, June 21, 2010 at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls with Rev. Dick Clark officiating. Visitation will also be held at the church from 7 to 9 PM on Sunday. Committal Services and Flag Presentation will be held at 2 PM on Monday at EvergreenCemeteryin Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is assisting the family.
Gary was born August 28, 1942 at Waterloo to Harold and Ruth (Dorsey) Demmel and he graduated from Vinton's Washington High School in 1960. He served his nation in the US Army and was stationed in Germany where he played in the Army Band. He attended Luther College and Upper Iowa University. Gary was a Social Worker and also a truck driver for CRST and Wes Schuster Trucking. He was a member of St. Timothy's United Methodist Churchin Cedar Falls where he sang in the church choir.
He had married Carol Miller and Nancy Sampino and on June 28, 1987 he was united in marriage to Darline Balm at Sherrill, Iowa.
Gary is survived by his wife, Darline of Cedar Falls; his children, Matthew (Bressa) Demmel of Union; and Tanya Demmel of Tipton; step-children, Stephen (Sara) Balm of Spirit Lake, Jonathon Balm and significant other, Angie Story of Brooklyn, Brian (Nancy) Balm of Omaha, and Michelle Balm of Jesup; grandsons, Michael and Jonathan Demmel; eleven step-grandchildren; two great grandchildren; eight step-great grandchildren; and his sister, Marilyn (Jerry) O'Connor of Polk City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, and one step-granddaughter.
