Remembering what I did not see in Kentucky

My second trip to Kentucky included something I never thought I would see  (a road on fire), a few things I have not seen for a while (a rainbow), some cool places I had not yet seen ( The Blue Heron coal mine and Cumberland Falls) -- and something cool I have only seen once before.

I have been the mayor of Garrison only since January of this year.  I cannot believe all that has been accomplished already this year.  Our fire station has been rebuilt from the storm of July 11th of last year, we have a new park thanks to Mandy and Shaun Fisher and family, Becky Decker and the many volunteers and donors.

New life for an old house

June moved in the old house 18 years ago. For years, the widow has lived alone at the end of a quiet street in Kentucky. We met June on Monday, and went to work on her house.

Kentucky Mission, Day 1: Long, winding road

Dean, they said you gotta take a picture of this. It was the first time anyone had ever asked me to take a picture of a screen. We were just about to our destination -- Eagle School Road near Parkers Lake, Kentucky.

My allergy medicine is missing -- which is not the best way to start August. All of the caps that keep the sun from putting wrinkled raccoon-like red circles on my eyes are hanging on the rack 530 miles to the northwest.

200th anniversary of the beginning of the War of 1812

June 2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the War of 1812.  This event, usually overlooked in most history books and courses, was a very important part of the Early American Republic and of North American history.
