Bill raising penalties for assaulting sports referees moves forward
By Robin OpsahlAn Iowa Senate subcommittee advanced a bill Wednesday that would make assaulting referees a Class D felony, in addition to providing civil liability protections to sports officials.Sen. Jeff Reichman, R-Montrose, said he proposed Senate File 50 in light of the assault of a referee in December at a high school basketball game in Burlington by a parent who disagreed with a call during the game.

Fareway Stores, Inc., IAwrestle, and Iowa Corn present the Dan Gable Ms. and Mr. Wrestler of the Year Awards in coordination with the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA).The IWCOA accepted nominations from high school coaches for student-athletes in each of the three state wrestling classes for the men and two classes for the women’s award, Class 1A and Class 2A, regardless of their year in school and weight class.

Baseball: State tournament sites set for 2025-28
Locations for the next four years of the IHSAA State Baseball Tournament are set following extensive planning for the upcoming 2025 postseason and beyond.The split site tournament will head west this summer to Sioux City and Carroll, then return to Cedar Rapids and Carroll from 2026 through at least 2028.“Thanks to a great team effort, our state baseball tournament will continue to be showcased at first-class facilities with outstanding hosts,” IHSAA executive director Tom Keating said.
