Vikette golfers win C.R. Prairie Invitational; defeat teams from several large schools

Vikings achieve best 18-hole score of season, place second at the South Tama Invitational

By VS Golf Coach Chad Pettyjohn The Vikings pulled together their best 18-hole score of the year Saturday placing second carding a 342. The place was secured going to the 5th score to beat Marion who also came in with a 342. Mike DeLong led the Vikings with a 4th place finish carding 80. Several other Vikings turned in their best 18-hole scores in competition: Tanner Cummings 87, Davis Bray 87, Broc Shaw 88, Barett Shaw 91, and Jace Rake 99.

WaMaC Champs! Vikettes win conference Supermeet at Wildcat

Brandi Gerber's 83 led the VS Vikette golf team to the championship in the 2017 WaMaC Girls Super Meet on Monday. Although she lost the one-hole playoff and had to settle for the silver medal, Gerber's 83 tied forbest among the 88 players who competed in the event at the Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg. Playing on one of their two home courses, the Vikette edged 2nd-place Central DeWitt by seven strokes.

Wolf Creek defeats champion SE Polk 28-7, Heads to state tournament to compete for 2nd title

Little Vikes Invitational: 7th graders 2nd, 8th graders finish 3rd

C.J. Rickels won the 7th grade 100M hurdles event at the Little Viking Invitational. C.J. Rickels won the 8th grade 100M hurdles event at the Little Viking Invitational. Tuesday's Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School's annual Little Viking Invitational included hundreds of seventh and eighth grade athletes from seven area schools. The VSMS 7th graders finished 2nd in team scoring; the 8th grade team was third. VS winners included: 7th: Max Vasquez, 100M.

Vikings 3rd at home meet

Even with several of their leading runners and throwers in Des Moines for the Drake Relays, the Vinton-Shellsburg Viking track team finished third at its annual home meet, the Viking Relays, on Thursday evening. Varsity winners for VS included: Wes Edwards, 110 hurdles, 17.24 4 x 200 (Seth Lazenby, Josh Witham, Keegan Thompson, Will Dudley) 1:35.

Vikettes Carley Kenney, Amelia Birker and Grace Horst each placed in the 1500M, and won another event, in the Vikette Invitational. Winning first-place medals for the Vikettes were: Amelia Birker, 400M, 1:05.44; Grace Horst, 800M, 2.

DeLong wins VS/WD Invitational medal after play-off; Vikings 5th in team scoring

Mike DeLong played the back nine one under to force a playoff against Chris Cooksley of East Buchanan. The sudden death playoff ended on the second hole when Mike made a tap in par putt to win. Cooksley is a two time individual champion in class 1A. Mike posted a one over 72 to force that playoff. The Vikings finished 5th in the team race carding a 364.

Wolf Creek (UNION Community) Rugby dominates to go (7-0-1) WITH TWO WINS

Isaiah Vaughan continues on his scoring frenzy this year! WOLF CREEK RUGBY rolled up two wins last Friday in Dysart, IA. The firstwin was a dominating (70-0) vs. Johnston. In the second matchup Wolf Creekwon (56-0) over Mason City. This Friday the team goes on the road to Iowa City. After struggling at the Benton Invite, the VS girls golf team played well at the West Delaware Invitational, where Rachel Tandy finished as individual runner-up, and the Vikettes finished 2nd in team scoring.
