The Union offense compiled just under 500 yards on 41 plays, a 12-yard-per play average.

Vikettes host Benton in home volleyball opener; Bobcats win, 3-0

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes hosted Benton Community Thursday in their first match at home this season. Benton won, 25-14, 25-10, 25-19. On Saturday, the Vikettes host a tournament. Outnumbered VS-Union swim team wins at Waterloo East

The Vinton-Shellsburg/Union girls swimming team earned a win for the team in the coaching debut of Ashley Hesson. Competing against Class 4A Waterloo East last Thursday at the Central Pool, the VS/Union team "swam an amazing meet against a team with 50% more swimmers," said Hesson. Despite their larger squad, which includes divers (VSU has none, so East earned all the points for diving events), the VSU girls came out on top, says Hesson.

Vinton Country Club Men's Tournament

By Matt Martin The Vinton CountryClub Men's Tournament was held this past Sunday, August 20th. Roger Murray survived an exciting 4 hole playoff over Mark Mossman to earn the men's club championship. Murray and Mossman carded 4 over par 74's while defending champion Matt Martin was one stroke back at 75. A steady light rain throughout the first half of the tournament and some very difficult pin placements made scoring difficult for most of the golfers.

Viking seniors Struve, Will Edwards end careers with All-Star game win

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) sponsors the All-Star Series which is held Aug. 3rd-6th in Des Moines. Teams are: Large Schools East, Large Schools West, Small Schools East and Small Schools West. A coaching staff picks the top 16 players from half the state to determine the teams. Small Schools East is comprised of the top 16 players from Class 3A, 2A, and 1A players from the eastern half of the State.

Several Vikings named to IHSBCA All-District baseball team

After finishing the regular season ranked third in Class 3A, the Vinton-Shellsburg Viking baseball team has seen many of its players earning post-season honors. The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association has named its All-District teams. Vikings recognized in the Northeast District include First Team honorees Nate Struve (pitcher), Will Edwards (catcher) and Tanner Davis (infield).

2017 Junior Gold Bowling Championships

The 2017 Junior Gold Bowling Championships were held in Cleveland Ohio with 1417 young men (U20) competing. Each youth bowler bowl four games on four different sport shot patterns. The competition started with two days of practices, which enabled each bowler to get an idea of how they should bowl on each sport pattern. These young men were bowling against other men from all over the United States and Puerto Rico.
