Tour de Lites: Yessak, Timmermans are winners in warmest race in 11 years

Runners of all ages ran the Tour de Lites 5k in Vinton on Sunday. A high school state cross country qualifier and a 49-year-old veterinarian were the top winners of the 11th Annual Tour de Lites on Sunday. Jordan Yessak of Vinton, a member of the Dunkerton State cross country team, was the top male finisher. Alice Timmermans was the first female to cross the finish line in the annual event.  More than 115 runners participated in the race, which is the main fund-raiser for the Vinton-Shellsburg track and cross country teams.

VS bowlers begin season with strong showing at Charles City

We had our first bowling meet for the season in Charles City tonight.  I am happy to say that all teams bowled very well.  The results are below. Varsity Boys team.  For our first meet we shot 200 pins above last years average which shows the dedication of these bowlers.  Unfortunately we lost to Charles City but these kids fought until the end.

Boys, girls cross country teams earn 9th place at State

Led by 6th place senior Lily Horst and her 12 place, ninth-grade sister Grace, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes placed 9th in the State Cross Country Meet on Saturday. The boys also placed ninth; both teams competed in the Class 3A field of 15. Jonah Blix and Cole Tharp led the Vikings, with the senior Blix finishing 34th and the sophomore Tharp a second behind in 35th place.

Knights take on #5 Waukon for 1st round of playoffs and fall short 32-13

The Union Knights finished the first quarter one tied 6-6 with the #5 rated Waukon Indians. Waukon scored 20 points in second period.  Union came out and scored in third to make it 26-13.  Final score Waukon 32, Union 13.   Union had five turnovers with two on special teams, two fumbles, and one interception. Union finishes the season (4-2) in 2A District 6 play and (4-6) overall.

Seniors lead Vikes to victory in season finale

Vikings celebrate their win over Crestwood Friday. In their last game in a Viking uniform, the Vinton-Shellsburg senior football players led their team to victory, scoring all six touchdowns in the 38-22 Viking victory at Crestwood. Senior QB Jordan Womochil completed six of nine passes for 119 yards and one touchdown, a 16-yard toss to classmate Nick Hyland. Jordan also ran the ball 17 times for 120 yards.

Yessak wins Class 1A qualifier; to compete in State Country Meet

Jordan Yessak with his parents, Jason and Anita. Jordan Yessak of Vinton, who runs for the Dunkerton cross country team, won last week's Class 1A state qualifying meet in Cedar Falls. Yessak, a junior, and his team each earned the right to race in this Saturday's State meet in Fort Dodge. His winning time awas16:50. The son of Jason and Anita Yessak of Vinton, Jordan open enrolls in Dunkerton, where his father teaches and coaches.

One year milestone: Cross Country teams to paint windows at Ehlinger's Wednesday

A year ago, Mel Davis and her staff welcomed the Vinton-Shellsburg cross country teams to Ehlinger's Express, where the runners were treated to free supper and hot chocolate and painted the windows to celebrate the accomplishment of earning a trip to State. That tradition continued with other VS teams throughout the past year.
