VS athletes must take Concussion Impact Cognitive Test

V-S is committed to taking a proactive approach towards your child’s safety and well-being during participation in athletics. ALL students who participate in any athletic sport (including cheerleading and Voyagers) are required to take a Concussion Impact Cognitive Test. The cognitive test will produce baseline results which will be used to determine the extent of any potential head injuries that may occur during athletic practices or games.

Hogan in three-way battle for Modified points championship at BCS

With three nights of racing left in the season, Vinton Modified driver Scott Hogan finds himself in the middle of a three-way battle for the Benton County Speedway points championship. The top three in the IMCA Modified standings this season at the BCS are as follows: 71 Troy Cordes, 442 points 33D Scott Hogan, 442 20L Zach Less, 440   Cordes currently holds the track championship tie-breaker with Hogan.

VS dedicates athletic complex; school leaders thank donors, sponsors

School Board members and sponsors gathered for a photo to celebrate the Karr project. Parents and children kicked soccer balls or tossed and kicked footballs as more than 125 people gathered at the newly-renovated Karr Athletic Complex to celebrate the completion of the new track resurfacing/field turf project.  School officials reviewed the project and thanked the donors and business sponsors who helped make the project possible.

Vikette alumni softball game includes players from several decades

For the third year in a row, Vikette softball players from several decades reunited at Thole Field to share laughs and memories and to test their skills.  As their parents and grandparents, and a few children watched, the teams played a 10-inning game Saturday evening. Organized by former player and current assistant Vikette coach Emily Grimm, the game was a "veterans" vs.

Vikings wrap up State baseball season; 'Hendo' named MVP

Viking players received a variety of team awards at the baseball wrap-up Sunday. Although the first-round loss to eventual state 3A champion Waverly-Shell Rock was a disappointment, Vinton-Shellsburg Viking players can look at the State score sheet and feel good about their performance.  Viking pitchers Tyler Rippel and Zach Boisen gave up two earned runs each against the eventual state champion Go-Hawks in the 6-0 W-SR win.

Hogan continues leading points at Vinton; Roster, Erger win features

Editor's note: After finishing 5th in Sunday's feature, Vinton modified racer Scott Hogan continues to be the points leader, by a narrow margin, although Troy Cordes gained a few points with his win Sunday. Hogan is also the Modifieds point leader at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. Sunday's event also included a Lil Racers Club box car race event that was dedicated to Zoey Tuttle, one of the Urbana 5, who would have celebrated her 13th birthday.

Golfer of the Year: VS player Stueck earns 2nd straight honor from CR Optimists

Ty Stueck of rural Vinton is the repeat C.R. Optimists Golfer of the Year Tyler Stueck will be a senior at Vinton-Shellsburg this fall.  He was selected last year as the "Golfer of the Year" through the Cedar Rapids Optimist Junior Golf Association (CROJGA), and also won the honor again this year. Tyler competed in five different tournaments this summer. Each was an 18 hole event consisting of anywhere from 16-32 boys in his division.
