Vikings come from behind to advance at Districts; to play Benton Monday

The VS Vikings advanced to the District Final with a 3-run rally in the 7th vs. S. Tama. Down 3-0 after five innings, the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team extended its season at least one more game by scoring once in the 6th inning and rallying for three runs in the 7th, when a walk-off single by catcher Aaron Henderson gave them a 4-3 win.    "I'm really proud of the guys on how they continued to believe they were going to win and performed their best when it mattered most," said Coach Jim Struve.

Vikings travel to Benton to begin District baseball action

Iowa high school baseball teams begin their post-season this week. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings will compete in the Class 3A, District 10 grouping, which includes Benton Community, South Tama and Union. The Vikings and Bobcats play at 5 p.m. on Friday; the Trojans and Knights play at around 7 p.m.  The winners will play for the district title at 7 p.

Viking Youth Football Camp set for first week in August

The annual Viking Youth Football Camp begins Aug. 3, for players entering grades 1-8. VS coach Jim Womochil has shared the official registration form, with specifications and costs. Click HERE to see that form. 

Auringer wins his third Hogan Memorial modified feature

Auringer raced his way into some rare company Sunday night at Benton County Speedway.  Auringer won the Hogan Memorial main event for Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds for the third time in his career, and joined Scott Hogan as the only two drivers to have now accomplished the feat in back-to-back years.

Vinton County Club announces Firecracker Tourney winners

Vinton Country Club held the 2nd annual Firecracker Tournament over the Fourth of July weekend. The format was a 4-person best shot, 18-hole tournament. Teams played any time Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Tee times were not required and the tournament was open to the public. 3rd Annual V-S Alumni Softball Game Scheduled for August 8th

The 3rd annual V-S Alumni Softball game is scheduled for Saturday, August 8th at 6pm.   This game is a slow-pitch game for all Vinton-Shellsburg alumni softball players. Player fee is $20 and that includes your alumni t-shirt.   Cost at the Gate will be charged as $5 per adult and $3 per student. All proceeds go to the Vinton-Shellsburg softball program.

21st Annual Hogan Memorial offers potential $5K pay day for winner

Many sponsors, including many local businesses, have helped keep the Hogan Memorial a success.  A potential payday of more than $5,000 awaits the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified feature winner at Benton County Speedway’s Sunday, July 12 Hogan Memorial.  The 21st annual event is 50 laps and now pays $1,950 to win, including a $500 bonus from RACEFEEDX and IMCA.TV. Lap money is $50 for every circuit led, plus $250 to the leader at halfway.

Dripps,Murty,Swanson top thrilling three-wide finishes at Benton County Speedway

Fans were seeing triple Sunday night at Benton County Speedway as three divisions came down to three-wide finishes in exciting action on the quarter-mile.   In the Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds, David Brown led throughout the 20-lap feature while Corey Dripps gave chase.   Brown was dialed in on the preferred high groove while Dripps pestered him from the low side.
