Big Men on Campus: Viking linemen win high school competition at ISU

Viking linemen celebrate their win in the Big Men contest at the ISU Football Camp. Congratulations to the Vinton-Shellsburg Viking football linemen, who narrowly won first place at the Iowa State University Football Camp's Big Man Challenge.  Blake Patterson, Tanner Bird, Tanner Holten, Jacob O'Brien, Grant Noren, Drew Wiley, Logan Murray, Ethan Henry, and Cole Overton went to Iowa State University to compete in the Big Man Challenge.

Leonard earns two 3rd-place awards at All-Star track meet

Payton Leonard ran the 400M, the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays at the Senior All-Star Spotlight. Vinton-Shellsburg senior track team member Payton Leonard earned two third-place honors at the Iowa Association of Track Coaches All-Star Spotlight Meet at the University of Dubuque on Saturday, June 13. Competing against runners from Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin, Leonard finished third in the 400M run. Her 4 x 400 relay team also finished third.

Auringer continues hot streak; wins Modified feature at BCS

VINTON, Iowa (June 14) – J.D. Auringer continued his recent hot streak in a big way at Benton County Speedway. The Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified driver earned his third win in eight days and pocketed $1,250 Sunday night by topping a 32-car field on Iowa Donor Network/Urbana 5 Memorial Night. The win also placed Auringer on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.

Vikings 7-6 on baseball season; Boisen leads pitchers with .81 ERA

Zach Boisen leads Viking pitchers with a .81 ERA and a 3-0 win-loss record. The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team is now 7-6 heading into tonight’s double-header at Solon. The Vikings swept Center Point-Urbana on Monday but lost two at Dyersville Beckman on Wednesday. Junior pitcher Zach Boisen has compiled a 3-0 record for the Vikings. He has an ERA of .81. Boisen allowed just three hits in his win over CPU on Monday.

Vinton Day at Kinnick: Special discount tickets available

The University of Iowa Athletic Department is hosting Vinton Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Iowa football team entertains Illinois State in its 2015 season opener. Any member of the Vinton community can purchase an unlimited number of $40 group rate adult tickets and $25 youth tickets.  The single game ticket price is $55 per seat.

VS trap shooting teams compete at State event

  First off Congrats to all our shooters! You did an outstanding job representing V-S and the Red Cedar Shooters!  Now for the stats- Red Cedar Gold came in at 58th place out of 248 squads Red Cedar Black came in 81st place out of 248 Squads Red Cedar Red came in 135th place Red Cedar Cedar came in 189th and Red Cedar Orange came in at 208th.

Tandy, Stueck finish 13th in State Co-Ed Golf Meet

Daniel Janssen, Kaiti Kilpatrick, Lauren Tandy and Tyler Stueck represented VS at State Co-Ed event. Four Vinton-Shellsburg golfers competed in the Class 2A Co-Ed tournament on Tuesday in Webster City. The team of Lauren Tandy and Tyler Stueck finished just one stroke away from earning a medal. Urbana 5 Memorial Race set for Sunday in Vinton

A $1,250 top prize and a spot on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot are at stake when Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modifieds headline the Sunday, June 14 Iowa Donor Network and Urbana 5 Memorial Night at Benton County Speedway. IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks race for $750 to win and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods both for $700.

Father and 13-year-old son among winners at BCS on Sunday

A father and son duo made it family night Sunday at Benton County Speedway. Xtreme Motor Sports IMCA Modified veteran Troy Cordes earned his first win of the season on the quarter-mile, but not before his 13-year-old son, Tristan, scored his second career win in the Micro Mod division. Jeff Davis held the early lead in the 12-lap Micro Mod main while Tristan Cordes gave chase after starting in row two.
