VS Bowling Team begins season today

The Vinton-Shellsburg bowling team holds its first home meet today, at Berry's Lanes, at 4 p.m. against AGWSR.  The Vinton-Shellsburg Bowling team also presented Steve and Carlyn Berry with bowling t-shirts as a thank you for supporting their team and to kick off to their bowling season.   The rest of the schedule is below.

Special Olympics Bowling: VS athlete Zach Kramer wins; Josh White 2nd

VS Special Olympics Bowling: Zach Kramer, left was first in his division; Josh White was second. Vinton-Shellsburg-Union was represented well at the State Special Olympics Bowling event on Saturday.  Zach Kramer finished first in his division; Josh White finished second. They had qualified last month at the event in Vinton.  Now Zach and Josh and the rest of the VSU team are preparing for their spring and summer events.

Vikettes scrimmage vs. Dunkerton; to begin season Tuesday

Point Guard Maci Griffith takes the ball up court. High school basketball fans had their first taste of the sport Saturday evening when the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes hosted Dunkerton in a pre-season scrimmage. The VS JV won 55-50, but the varsity lost 55-47 in an evening dedicated to area veterans. “I saw some good things as well as some things we need to work on,” said Coach Deb Schirm.

VS cross country athletes receive honors

Vinton-Shellsburg cross country athletes received All-Conference and team awards during the team's wrap-up. Girls Lily Horst, Bristi Gerber and Cassie Kenney earned First-Team All-Wamac honors. For the boys, Jordan Evans and Derek Dinderman were named to the Second Team while Nolan Sagan received Honorable Mention.  VS runners were represented well on the Wamac All-Academic team.

Bowling fund-raiser brings in $2,000 for new VS program

Amber Pattee said she volunteered to be the VS bowling coach because of her father. Today, kids and adults were lighting up the lanes at the 9 Pin Bowling Tournament to support the V-S Bowling team.  We had 117 bowlers knocking down the pins to try to get a higher score than everyone else, in their age group.  The afternoon was a success for the bowling team as they rocketed past their fundraising goal of $3000.  Now the team can concentrate on getting ready for their first competition on November 26th.

Former Viking Gunner Tranel celebrates big play; hopes for starting role

Grandpa Duane Johnson and mom Kathy Tranel pose with Gunner Tranel at Wartburg. Gunner Tranel had the biggest moment so far in his collegiate football career this month, but looks forward to making more of them during his next two years at Wartburg.  Tranel, a 2011 VS graduate who earned several honors as a Viking, is a sophomore at Wartburg. He plays on special teams and has recorded several tackles during kick-offs.

2012 Vikette Ashley Strong part of 5th place team at NJCAA Nationals

Former Vikette Ashley Strong serves for SWCC, which has earned a spot in the Nationals. Former Vinton-Shellsburg athlete Ashley Strong has made college volleyball headlines twice this month First, her team at SWCC (Southwest Community College) has finished fifth in the NJCAA Division II Volleyball National Championship in Ohio. Second, Sttong has signed as a junior college transfer with Division II University of Mary in Bismarck, N.

Little Vikes Wrestling Tourney brings 312 youngsters

Wyatt Walker was one of several VS Wrestling Club winners to earn first place during the tourney. VSHS Wrestling Coach Joel Neve said the 312 participants in Saturday's Vinton-Shellsburg Wrestling Club's annual tournament outnumber last year's participants by about 75.  The youngsters spent much time warming up and practicing with dads, coaches and even little siblings before their matches. Wrestlers from throughout eastern Iowa competed.

Vikings review 2013 season at annual wrap-up

Freshman Coach Tony Stenberg congratulates his team on their 7-2 season during the wrap-up. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings looked back on a tough season plagued by injuries, but looked forward as well to next year, during the annual wrap-up on Thursday. Coach Joe Womochil reminded the team that in its early losses, it held 4th-quarter leads. The Vikings finished 2-7 on the year, and will play in a new district next year. Womochil said he believes the new districts will be announced in January.
