Horst continues winning; Vikettes second at S. Tama Cross Country meet

 Middle school heading off to check out the course at ST. Vinton-Shellsburg sophomore Lily Horst continued her cross country winning streak finishing first at the South Tama meet on Monday evening. The VS girls finished second in team scoring while the Vikings, again led by Derek Dinderman, came in fourth.  This event also included JV and Middle School events.Eighth-grader Cole Tharp led VSMS runners, finishing second.

Cross Country: Three VS girls place in top 10; boys 4th at BC

Sophomore Lily Horst won again, leading a trio of Vinton-Shellsburg girls in the top 10 finishers of the Benton Invitational on Saturday. Horst finished first with a time of 15:20; Bristi Gerber was fifth and freshman Cassie Kenney was ninth. The VS girls finished third, behind Mount Vernon-Lisbon and Williamsburg. Boys 4th in team scoring The VS boys, led by junior Derek Dinderman, finished fourth.

Still perfect: VS freshmen rout Oelwein, 44-8

The Mercy Rule was in effect throughout the second half as the Vinton-Shellsburg freshman football team built a big lead early at Oelwein. The Vikings led by 36 at the half, 44-8. Under the Mercy Rule, the clock runs without stopping if one team leads by 35 or more in the second half.  Rookie Coach Tony Stenberg and the ninth graders are now 3-0, having outscored their opponents by a total margin of 100-30.

Vikings win first district contest of year, defeat Oelwein, 58-26

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings enter Homecoming Week "at the top of the district," Coach Jim Womochil told his football players after their 58-26 win at Oelwein Friday night.  The Vikings gained 440 yards on the ground and another 34 through their passing game, scoring all seven touchdowns on running plays. Sophomore Nick Hyland led the Vikes with 220 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Viking defense rules as freshmen win again, 42-16 at S. Tama

A strong defense that recorded two interceptions helped the Vinton-Shellsburg freshman football team to its second straight win under first-year coach Tony Stenberg.  Vikings Tyler Bartz and Lane Rowe each intercepted a pass and the Edwards twins (Wesand Will) combined for 185 yards rushing and four touchdowns (along with several tackles on defense).

Vikes can't overcome slow start, lose 26-21 at South Tama

Jordan Womochil completed 8 of 10 passes. The Vinton-Shellburg football team started too slowly, said coach Jim Womochil, as he described the Vikings 26-21 loss at South Tama on Friday. The Trojans scored on their first two possessions and kept the Vikings deep in their own territory until the middle of the second quarter, building a 13-0 lead.  "It took us a quarter and a half to get going," said Womochil.

Lily Horst wins girls event; VS boys place first at Williamsburg

Lily Horst won the girls varsity race, 50 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. The 2013 Vinton-Shellsburg cross country season -- delayed a week because of the heat -- began in similar fashion as 2012, with Lily Horst at the head of the pack among girls and the VS boys taking first place. Horst, now a sophomore, led VS girls and finished first in the event 50 seconds ahead of the second-place runner at the Raider Invitational in Williamsburg on Tuesday evening.

Viking Freshman give Stenberg first win against his former coaches

After the Vinton-Shellsburg freshmen defeated Benton Community, 14-6, in Friday's season opener, Tony Stenberg stood at midfield, receiving congratulations from the men who had coached him as a player. Stenberg, a 2009 graduate, is in is first year as a teacher at the V-S Alternative High School, and also as freshman football coach. He had played football and other sports at Benton, where the same men who coached the opposing team on Friday had coached him from 2005-2009.

Vikings defeat Benton, look to avenge 2012 loss to South Tama

While celebrating with his team the 48-19 win over Benton Community on Friday, Vinton-Shellsburg football coach Jim Womochil reminded them of last season, when they followed a big win over Benton with a disappointing loss to South Tama. Bowling coming to VSHS; coach needed

  On Monday night, the school board approved the addition of a high school bowling program for the Vinton-Shellsburg school district.   The Vinton-Shellsburg high school students addressed the school board last spring with this proposal and they are really excited about this opportunity to compete against other high schools.  Our Vinton-Shellsburg team will join multiple schools in our conference in bowling competitions at local bowling alleys.
