Cornell's arm, McKenna's bat lift Vikettes to 13-0 regional victory

Game face: Maddie Cornell shut out Marion in the Vikettes' regional opener win Thursday. Senior pitcher Maddie Cornell, with solid defense behind her, kept Marion from mounting any serious scoring threat, and junior RBI record-setter Ashley McKenna’s 3-run home run provided the big boost as Vinton-Shellsburg defeated Marion 13-0 in the Regional opener. The Vikettes advance to play Benton Community in Van Horne on Saturday. “We’re going to have to play our best to beat Benton,” said coach Bari Parrott.

Vinton Merchants: Area residents sponsor Prime Time League team again

Once again, Vinton area residents have helped sponsor a team in the Prime Time Basketball League. This year, the Greater Iowa Financial Group/Vinton Merchants team, coached by Kevin Sanders, includes U of Iowa players Devyn Marble and Josh Oglesby, as well as former Benton Community player Nick Fisher. This is the sixth year that Vinton residents, led by Kent Stufflebeam, have sponsored a team in the Prime Time League.

Viking hurlers struggle in loss to Oelwein

After a week of strong pitching performances against Marion, Center Point-Urbana and Anamosa, Viking hurlers struggled during Monday’s home contest vs. Oelwein. V-S allowed 14 walks in seven innings as the Huskies won, 14-5. Freshman pitchers Tyler Rippel and Austin Bohnsack saw action against the Huskies. Rippel allowed one earned run in 2 1/3 innings while Bohnsack entered the game in the seventh, giving up no earned runs.

Regional softball: Vikettes host Marion in Round 1, Thursday

The Vinton-Shellsburg softball team heads into the post-season having beaten 20 of the 24 teams it has faced. The Vikettes earned splits in most of their double-headers during a season in which they finished with 22 wins and 15 losses. V-S hosts Marion Thursday in the first round of regional action. The winner of that game plays Saturday at Benton, which received a first-round bye.

Vikings defeat CPU in 8, 2-1

Grant Sagan pitched the entire game, holding CPU to one run in 8 innings After putting the winning run on third base with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but failing the score, the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team had to go into extra innings to defeat Center Point-Urbana during the first game of the Monday double-header. In the eighth, Josh Ferguson led off with a double. Luke Moen singled; Ferguson rounded third and slid into home as the ball bounced away from the CPU catcher.

VS girls named to All-State Academic and All-District teams

Vinton-Shellsburg golfers Natalie Ketchen and Kacie Struve achieved the honor of being named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association All State Academic Team.  (Players must be a senior and have a minimum ACT score of 27 and a GPA minimum of 3.75.)    All District Golf team selections have been announced;  Erin Randall and Natalie Ketchen were both named All-District for the South Central district.

Area golfers compete at Optimist event; Katie Kilpatrick earns second place

Optimist golf event participants: Tyler Stueck, Katie Kilpatrick and Grant Noren. Tyler Stueck, Katie Kilpatrick and Grant Noren competed in the Airport National Optimist Golf Tourney on June 10. Katie placed 2nd in the girls 15-18 age group.
