Independence Motor Speedway cancels June 6 special
Due to wet track and pit area conditions, the Thursday, June 6, Entry Level Extravaganza at Independence Motor Speedway has been canceled.
Although the special event for IMCA SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts will not be rescheduled, the increased purse planned for that event will be offered during an upcoming weekly program at the speedway.
Four VS golfers compete at State Coed meet; Rippel, Randall 14th
Four V-S students participated in the State Coed Golf Tournament at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella on Tuesday. This is a very challenging course that is difficult to walk; it is lengthy and hilly. There are many lateral hazards and sand bunkers; the rough and no mow areas were exceedingly thick and long. The greens are undulating and the pin placements were tricky. Sophomore Brea Burroughs has pitched 10 consecutive shut-out innings and senior pitcher Maddie Cornwell has struck out 27 batters in 29 innings to help lead the Vinton-Shellsburg softball team to a 6-2 record.
Burroughs has held opponents to a .169 batting average and has an ERA of just .32.

For the third year in a row, Vinton-Shellsburg alumni football players will put on their pads and helmets, hoping for a win against Center Point-Urbana in an Alumni USA Football game.

501 wins: Vikings honor Coach Struve for milestone, then split with Raiders
The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball fans honored coach Jim Struve (who also played high school b baseball as a Viking) for his 500th win as a coach on Monday evening.
Coach Struve reached that milestone two weeks ago, when the Vikings scored consecutive sweeps of East Marshall and Independence. The celebration presentation was delayed a week because of rain that postponed last week's scheduled contests. Joel Neve chosen as VSHS head wrestling coach
A former Viking wrestler who says he initially hung around the mats after graduating so he could help a teammate has been chosen to be the next head wrestling coach at Vinton-Shellsburg.
Joel Neve received the offer on Monday after an interview with AD Jim Struve. His hiring will become official when the VS School Board formally approves it. Alumni Football game Friday at Center Point; silent auction of UI helmet planned
Former Iowa Hawkeye and NFL player Tim Dwight will be an honorary captain for CPU during the Alumni USA Football game between Vinton-Shellsburg and Center Point-Urbana alumni teams in Center Point this Friday.
A silent auction for an American Forces Network helmet -- possibly signed by Tim Dwight -- will be part of Friday's activities in Center Point. Justin Stander wins Hobby Stock feature at Independence Motor Speedway
INDEPENDENCE – Justin Stander of Shellsburg, an employee of Tharp Design (one of his sponsors) won the Hobby Stock feature race in Independence to begin the month of June on area dirt tracks. Stander began the race in fifth and passed leader Vince Buchholz as the white flag waved and led the final lap before taking the checkered flag.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters remain in the top ten Trap Shooting teams in the State for a third consecutive year after a 7th Place finish at the Iowa High School Trap Shooting Championships held in Cedar Falls on Friday.
The Red Cedar team ended their regular season on May 18th, ranked 12th in the State in league standings going into the State Meet, out of 122 participating Iowa high school teams.
