“Little ‘c,’ not big ‘C.’
“Nose to the ball.”
“Smash.”
“Flood.”
“41.”
Vinton-Shellburg Viking football players – present and future – are learning the meaning of these words in seven-on-seven workouts every Wednesday night at an “open field” practice behind Tilford Elementary.

Confession: I have not watched a dirt track race in Vinton since the “Figure 8” track was in use.
Oh, I have been to the grandstands at the Benton County Fairgrounds many times each year for Fair and Boomtown events, but never to the races.
When Jolyne Hogan sent out a Facebook invitation to the Hogan Memorial, I thought it would be a good chance to learn how to take racing photos while also being part of a great event in honor of one of the 20th Century leaders in my profession.

Contact between vehicles is a part of dirt track racing; most cars that circled the track at the Benton County Speedway have scars from encounters with other vehicles.
Here are a few photos from Sunday's Hogan Memorial that show how a quarter mile dirt track can indeed be a crash course.
Because of the risk of collision and injury and fire, the Vinton Fire Department and North Benton Ambulance Service have vehicle and personnel at every race.

“ONE! ONE! ONE!”
Vinton-Shellsburg catcher Rachel Clemens says she was not thinking double play as she stood with her foot on home plate, waiting for the throw from pitcher Maddie Cornell.
The Vikettes were hanging on to a one-run lead when Benton Community loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning and nobody out.
Cornell had just struck out the Bobcat catcher; the next batter hit a bouncer back to the Vikette pitcher.

Cayden Carter proved patience is a virtue.
Carter remained committed to the high groove and took advantage of a late restart to edge Richie Gustin in the 19th annual Hogan Memorial Sunday at Benton County Speedway.
Gustin led much of the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified 40-lapper, but a late caution allowed Carter to challenge for the lead as the white flag waved.

After five innings of nearly perfect defense helped them to a 3-2 lead over Benton Community, three consecutive sixth-inning miscues by the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes loaded the bases in the regional final at Benton Community.
With Bobcats on all three bases and nobody out, Vikette pitcher Maddie Cornell faced Bobcat catcher Emily Walton, whose two-run homer during her previous at-bat in the fourth inning had tied the game.
