Urbana driver Duffy among opening night winners at Independence Motor Speedway

  INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (April 27) – Independence Motor Speedway started its 2013 season with 113 race teams into the pit area for opening night action. By night’s end, six of those drivers were standing in victory lane.   In the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature, front row starter J.D. Auringer took the lead at the drop of the green and quickly pulled away from the pack.

Tandy leads Vikettes to second place at home invitational

Cara Hach   Lauren Tandy led the Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team for the first time in her career, shooting a 45 as the Vikettes finished second in a home invitational tournament against Williamsburg, West Delaware and Independence, Friday at the Vinton County Club. Vikings third at home invitational

In a season that has included many weather-related track meet cancellations, the Vinton-Shellsburg boys hosted their invitational tournament Thursday at the Karr Athletic Complex. The Vikings, led by runners Ricky Jeray and Nolan Sagan, and discus thrower Chase Overton, placed third in team scoring, with 93.5 points. Solon won the meet with 108; West Delaware was second.

Randall's best round at Pin Oaks leads Vikette golfers to win at WD tourney

Vikette golfers and coach Janet Woodhouse celebrate WD Tournament win Monday.   Erin Randall led the Vikings with a 42, and lost for the medalist honors only through a tie-breaker, as she led the Vinton-Shellsburg golfers to a win at the West Delaware Tournament Monday in Manchester. Vikette track team helps at Special Olympics

  The Vinton-Shellsburg High School girls track team continued its tradition of helping with the Special Olympics event in Cedar Rapids again this year. The girls and coach Heather Kalous participated in this year's event on Saturday, April 20. 

Hadachek and cheerleaders Sparks and Bechthold to represent Union in Shrine Game

Union Shrine Bowl: Grace Sparks, Jenny Sparks, Adria Bechtold, Kurt Bechtold, Gloria, Trev & Joe H. Three Union students will be representing the Knights at the 2013 Iowa Shrine game held at UNI this year.  The game will be played on Saturday, July 27th at the UNI Dome. The game was previously played at Jack Trice stadium on the campus of ISU.  Game time  kickoff is 4:00pm. Game tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Children 6 and under get in free.

Vikettes second at Benton Tourney; now 13-1 in 2013 golf season

Vikette golfers took second place at the Benton tournament on Saturday at Tara Hills. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikette golf team is now 13-1 after finishing second to Independence on Saturday in the 18-hole Benton tournament at Tara Hills Golf Course, Van Horne. Special Olympics Regional Track and Field competition this Saturday

  The Vinton Shellsburg United Special Olympics team will join nearly 300 area athletes this Saturday at Clark Field on the Coe College campus for the East Central Iowa Regional Games. First place finishers will advance to the State Competition in May held at Iowa State. You may have noticed the team name has changed this year, adding the word "United".
