Still a 'Viking;' Grant Sagan signs with Grand View

Grant Sagan's siblings Josie, Anna, Nolan joined him, his parents and coaches for the signing. After visiting a few other Iowa colleges and thinking he had found at least one he liked, Vinton-Shellsburg senior basketball player Grant Sagan went to Grand View University in Des Moines and found "the match" for his collegiate hoops career. "I like the coach, I like the size, I liked that it was a 4-year school, and the players were all very nice to me," said Grant, who officially signed with Grand View Monday morning.

Red Cedar Shooters win first home meet; Svoboda, Ervin earn individual honors

  The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters hosted AGWSR for their first Trap Shooting meet of the season today at the Red Cedar Chapter of the Izaak Walton League.   The Red Cedar Shooters won today’s event, with V-S Junior Caleb Svoboda taking the male Top Shot honors with a score of 46/50, and V-S Junior Sara Jorgensen taking the female Top Shot honors with a score of 41/50.

Rippel leads Vikings to victory in home golf opener

Daniel Ervin The varsity and JV won their meets last night against Center Point-Urbana.   Varsity won 177-193 JV won 201-203   Dylan Rippel was the first place medalist with 39; Tyler Stueck was the 2nd place medalist with a 44. Grant Noren golfed varsity and finished with 46 and Daniel Jannssen was Varsity with a 48.   Top two JV golfers were Bryce Shaw with 47 and Austin Bohnsack with 48.

VSHS girls golf: Vikettes win at Center Point

  The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes won their first golf meet of the year, a dual vs Center Point-Urbana, at Rolling Acres Golf Course in Center Point.  Under cool and cloudy conditions, the Vikettes, led by Erin Randall. won, 183-214.   CPU and V-S both improved their team scores from last year’s meet. Coach's summary: V-S’s four returning veterans played very well tonight; we were pleased with our scores, especially since we have had limited time to practice outside.

Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap Team to host first home meet of season

  The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters Trap Team will host AGWSR for their first competition of the season this Saturday, April 6th at the Red Cedar Chapter Izaak Walton League.    Practice rounds start at 7:30 a.m., and competition will begin at 9 a.m.   The Red Cedar Shooters number 33 members this year, up from 20 last season, and the most ever in the 5 year history of the program.

Vikings celebrate season at Basketball Wrap-Up

State tourney honor: Viking players and coaches received basketballs from the Iowa Farm Bureau. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings basketball players gathered with their families Monday night to reflect on their historic season, and to say thank you to all of those who in some way helped make the 2012-13 campaign a historic one. “We are here to celebrate,” said Coach Joe Johnson, who handed out All-Conference and All-State Academic Awards as well as awards for accomplishments on the basketball court.

VS Baseball team seeks 7-year-old players

Hogan begins 2013 racing season with checkered flag at Lee County

Scott Hogan had plenty of reasons to smile after winning his first event of the 2013 season. Vinton race car driver Scott Hogan won his first race of the season,  starting from the front row, regaining the lead on several restarts, and taking the IMCA Modified checkered flag Friday night at the Lee County Speedway in Donnelson in southeast Iowa. Like other parts of Iowa, Lee County had been under winter weather for the past few weeks; on Monday, crews removed snow from the track.

BC Speedway car show downtown Saturday; first races Sunday

Details for the Saturday, March 30, Car Show. The Benton County Speedway season starts with a car show in downtown Vinton and practice to follow at the fairgrounds on Saturday, March 30th. The fourth annual car show, brought to you by the RonDaVoo, will be from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on 5th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue. Everyone is welcome to come see the cars up close and vote for their favorites.

Frostbuster to include five classes of race cars April 7

Five IMCA divisions will see action on Sunday, April 7, in Benton County Speedway’s Frostbuster special. IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds race for $1,000 to win in their 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invita­tional ballot qualifier. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars run for $500 to win, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods for $400 and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $250.
