VPRD arranging charter bus for State Basketball

The Vinton-Shellsburg boy's basketball team is headed to the State Tournament in Des Moines and we are offering a way to get you there as well! The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting signups for a seat on a chartered bus headed to Des Moines to watch the boys play on Tuesday, March 5th. The cost of this trip is only $18 per person and includes transportation, parking, ticket to the game and a brown-sack supper for the ride home.

VS planning early out, pep buses for State game March 5

The Vinton-Shellsburg boys’ basketball team will play in the state tournament starting on Tuesday, March 5 at 3:45.  The school district will have a three hour early out on Tuesday so students and families can attend the game. We are working on providing pep busses for our middle school and high school students for $13/seat which includes a ticket to the game and the bus.

The annual 'Vinton Community Night' at the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders hockey game is now less than a month away and tickets for the event are now on sale at two convenient Vinton locations. Come out with friends and family on Saturday, March 9th to enjoy a fast-paced, hard-hitting hockey game as the RoughRiders take on the Sioux Falls Stampede at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Vikings have one more goal to accomplish: State Championship

Vikings celebrate reaching State Tournament after Sub-State win Monday.   Standing late last night on the court where their last loss – which took place a year ago tomorrow – taught them what they could accomplish this year, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings looked back on the first 24 games of their season. The journey began, not with basketballs in their hands, but pencils. “We made a goal sheet,” said Chris Merchant and Chase Overton, the Vikings’ sixth and seventh men – who also make it a point to stand side-by-side when the National Anthem is played before each game.

On to State! Vikings earn trip to Des Moines with 65-56 win over Crestwood

Next stop: Des Moines! Max Kearns begins the celebration as the Vikings complete their win. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings will play Harlan at 3:45 p.m. next Tuesday, March 5, in the opening round of the Iowa High School State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines. The Vikings earned the berth with a 65-56 Sub-State win over Crestwood at the McLeod Center on the UNI campus Monday night. Grant Sagan again led the Vikings in scoring witth 24.

Supporting Red Cedar Shooters: Whitetails donate to VSHS Trap Shooting Team

Whitetails Board members Lenny Engelking and Jared Vogeler present $1,000 to Sara & Kyle Jorgensen. The Prairie Creek Sports Club/Whitetails Unlimited Chapter of Benton County donated $1000 to the Vinton Shellsburg High School Trap Team.  Presenting the check were Whitetails Unlimited Board Members Lenny Engelking and Jared Vogeler. Accepting the donation are High School Trap team athletes Sara and Kyle Jorgensen.   Also the Prairie Creek Sports Club/Whitetails Unlimited Chapter of Benton County donated $2500.

Substate preview: High-scoring Vikings face one of Iowa's best defenses

  One of the best defenses in Class 3A is preparing to face the highest-scoring offense in tonight’s Sub-State 3 match-up. While the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings are leading Class 3A in points scored (1,608), the Crestwood Cadets are among the best defenses in the state. The Vikings average 69.9 points per game; the Crestwood defense has held its opponents to an average of 47.

Vikings return to Sub-State; to play Crestwood Monday at McLeod Center

On Monday, the Vinton-Shellsburg basketball team will travel to the place where they last lost a high school basketball game, hoping to get to the State Tournament for the second time in Vinton-Shellsburg history, and the first time since 1996. The Vikings struggled early Friday night in their District final in the Benton Community gym, as Union poured in seven 3-pointers in the first half, and kept the basketball game close throughout three quarters.
