With four of the five starters in double digits for scoring, and with Class 3A assist leader Max Kearns dishing out 10 more, the Vinton-Shellsburg VIkings built an early 23-8 lead over Union Thursday and won 69-57.

Less than two hours before their 72-23 win over South Tama, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings were named the top Class 3A boys basketball team in Iowa. The Vikings earned six of the 14 first-place votes in the third AP poll of the season.

Vikings remain undefeated; host ST, Benton this week.

  The Vinton-Shellsburg boys basketball team escaped last week’s road trip with its undefeated record intact. The Vikings built a 35-23 half-time lead at Center Point-Urbana, but needed every one of those 12 points to hold on for a two-point win, 59-57, last Tuesday.
