Horst, Gerber lead WAMAC MS girls cross country event; take 2nd,3rd at State
For most of the year, Vinton-Shellsburg eighth grade students Lily Horst and Bristi Gerber have finished first and second in middle school cross country meets.
The two finished first and second again at the Oct. 10 WAMAC middle school 8th grade girls race, leading the VS girls to second place.
The two girls train together, both at practices and other events such as the Bring the Noise 5K in August. VS varsity boys finish 5th at N. Linn meet
Wyatt Lyons led the Vinton-Shellsburg boys to a 5th place finish in the North Linn Lynx Invite last week.

&nbs Rapid Recap: Knights end Marion's Playoff Dreams with 45-14 Blowout
The Union Knights ran past the traditional powerhouse of the Marion Indians tonight by a final score of 45-14.
Momentum was largely in favor of the Knights as the Indians muffed the opening kickoff and started inside their own 5-yard line. Following a three-and-out by the Indians, Knights kicker Brady Petersen nailed a 41-yard field to give the Knights a 3-0 lead, a lead they would not let go of for the entire night.
Football playoff picture: Union in; CPU, Benton can advance with win next week
With one week left in the Class 3A District 5 schedule, three of the top four teams that will advance to the post-season have already been determined.
Maquoketa, at 6-0 in District 5 action, is the District champion. Two teams are 4-2 in district play and will also advance to the playoffs: Union and Western Dubuque.

Dear Baseball:
As we approach the end of our season together, I thought it would be a good time to thank you for being at my side in 2001.
It began in February, when the news that pitchers and catchers were heading to camp made the coldest days of winter feel a bit warmer.
