       The daughter of an immigrant from Ecuadorwho lived through some difficult times was singing, while a big, strong man wiped a tear from his eye.        To me, when I cover sporting events, I pay as much attention to what’s going on in the stands as I do to what is going on between the white lines (or in basketball season, the black lines).

Pink Night for Vikettes; V-S girls defeat CCA

Vikettes wore pink ribbons in their hair to honor breast cancer survivors.     Players on both teams wore pink in their hair, and the Vinton-Shellsburg girls wore black and pink warm-up suits Friday when they hosted Clear Creek-Amana on the basketball court at VSHS.     Continuing a tradition, the Vikettes are raising money again this year to fight breast cancer. The pink basketball used for tipoff was raffled; raising $200.

Cheer on your 5th & 7th grade Vikes

  5th grade and 7th grade boys basketball teams will host a tournament this Saturday at the V/S High School.    The 5th grade teams will play in the morning starting at 8 am, with teams visiting from around the metro area.  The 7th grade will follow in the afternoon.    A wide assortment of

WaMaC wrestling: Four Vikings take 6th place in their weight class

Viking Ryan Webster finished 6th at the WaMaC wrestling tournament at 152. During the WaMaC wrestling tournament Saturday, four Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers earned 6th place finishes. They include: Ryan Webster at 152; Jake Hessenius, 140; Ian Storey, 135; and Nathan Merchant, 119.

Bobcat revenge: 3-point shots lift Benton over Vikings 59-50

       Benton Community avenged an earlier loss at Vinton, defeating the Vinton-Shellsburg boys, 59-50 on the court in Van Horne Friday night.      The Bobcats hit more than half of their three point tries, going 8 of 15 from behind the arc. Mitch Lester led the Bobcats with 17; Zach Twedt added 16.

Williams leads Iowa3A basketball players in assists

In addition to being a state leader in assists, Logan Williams is fourth in scoring in WaMac West.        Vinton-Shellsburg Viking guard Logan Williams leads the entire state of Iowa among class 3A teams in assists. The Viking senior has recorded 88 assists in 15 games.      Williams is also fourth in scoring among all WaMaC West players, averaging 16.3 points per game. Brody Beatty is seventh, with an average of 15.

Vikings, Vikettes both in third place in WaMaC West basketball standings

       The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings ended their two-game losing streak with a 59-23 win at Waterloo Columbus Tuesday evening.      Brody Beatty led the Vikings with 19 points. Logan Williams added 14 and Jake Dyson, 10.      The Vikings travel to Van Horne on Friday to play Benton Community.

Viking swimmers lose close home dual vs. Decorah

Sean Dulin competed in several events for the Vikings.      With few high schools having swim teams, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings find themselves competing against the same swimmers several times throughout the season. Tuesday night, the Vikings hosted a home meet at the Iowa Braille School gym, where they again swam against the Decorah Vikings.        Coach Rob Levis submitted the following summary of the contest:        Despite a full house of supporters and their best performance of the year, the Vikings swimmers were unable to overcome a tough Decorah team last night at the IBSSS pool.
