Special Olympians prepare for April 16 track event at Coe

     Benton County Special Olympians will lead the Parade of Champions for the track competition event on April 16, at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.      And when they recite the Special Olympics Oath, a Vinton-Shellsburg participant, Hunter Burg, will lead them. The Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team members are also making plans to help (and cheer) for the event.

Welcome to another round of racing at Benton County Speedway.  What originally looked like a washout according to earlier forecasts turned into another nice night of racing with Mother Natures help.  The opening points night is being brought to you by the fine folks at Fisher Towing. I know alot of folks have been complaining about the track surface, but it will take some time for the new dirt to settle in.

Scott Hogan among Week 2 winners at Benton County Speedway

VS girls win golf dual vs. Center Point-Urbana

     The Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team won a dual meet  vs. Center Point-Urbana, at Rolling Hills Golf Course outside of Center Point Thursday. Par for the course is 35.      Hannah Looney led all golfers with a 45 to earn meet medalist honors. Liz Moen, playing for the JV, scored a 49.

Brian's View from the Grandstand: Week 1 at Vinton

       Welcome to another season of Views from the Grandstands.  The final night of the Frostbuster takes us to Vinton. First I want to mention a few things about the track. They removed the large white tractor tires and in their place they buried tires marking the racing surface.  From what I heard, they retiled turns one and two and added quite a bit of dirt to the racing surface.

Vikings win several events in Early Bird meet, finish 4th

     The Vinton-Shellsburg boys track team finished fourth in its Early Bird meet Friday in Vinton.      The Vikings earned 89 points, behind Dubuque Wahlert, Solon, and Western Dubuque. Union Finished fifth and Benton Community, sixth.      Several V-S athletes won varsity events.      Jason Kirk won the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.

Benton County Speedway opens with April 3 Frostbuster special

The first green flag of the season flies at Benton County Speedway this Sunday, April 3, when five IMCA divisions converge at Vinton for the traditional Frostbuster special. The IMCA Modified feature pays $1,000 to win and is a qualifying event for the 2011 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars run for $500 to win, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods for $400, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $250 and Mach-1 Sport Compacts for $150.
