Sports : State Track: Sagan 5th in 800M, Viking 4 X 400 team takes 6th

Senior Nolan Sagan led the VS boys this weekend, earning one fifth place medal for the Vikings and earning a share of a 6th place medal.

On Saturday, Sagan finished in 5th place in the 800M event, with a time of 1:57.18.

Later that day, the Vinton-Shellsburg boys 4 X 400M relay team (Chase Overton, Tyler Bartz, Ben Hyland and Nolan Sagan) finished in 6th place with a time of 3:27.33 to earn the school's second top 8 medal of the weekend.

Vikette sophomore long distance runner Lily Horst just barely missed receiving a medal on Thursday. She finished ninth in the 3000M event with a time of 11:04.67. On Saturday, Horst finished 17th in the 1500M, with a new VS school record time of 5:03.46.

Bristi Gerber ran in the 800M for the Vikettes on Saturday; she finished in 23rd place.

The best performance for the boys on Thursday was by Sagan, who set a new VS school record in the 400M, finishing 10th with a time of 50.70.

Vikette Payton Leonard finished in 11th place in both the 200M (26.43) and 400M (59.85).

Viking Chase Overton was 16th in discus, with a distance of 137 feet, 10 inches.

In the 100M dash, Viking sophomores Nick Hyland and Joel Barnes competed. Hyland finished 18th and Barnes 22nd.

In the girls 4 x 200 team, the Vikette quartet of Dawne Schminke, Payton Leonard, Sydney Robertson, & Lodorshae Mull finished with their fastest time of the season (1:48.14) and wound up in 14th place. These same four girls had competed in the Drake Relays in the 4 x 100 earlier this season.

3200 boys results How tough was the competition in the Class 3A boys 3200 M run event? This tough: Albert Meier of Boone broke the previous all-time state record by seven seconds. Yet, he finished third, more than 10 seconds behind Thomas Pollard of Gilbert, who as a junior has already won national track honors. Second place went to another Boone senior, Chandler Austin, who finished the race in 8:51.74. Viking Jordan Evans finished in 20th place (10:24.64) and Derek Dinderman was 21st (10:46.92).
