Sports : Wolf Creek defeats champion SE Polk 28-7, Heads to state tournament to compete for 2nd title

(photo by John Vaughan, Sr.)Wolf Creek rugby has been only in existence for three years. The club has 18 athletes from Union Community (Dysart/LaPorte City) and one from Don Bosco. The headcoach Deandre Moore is a volunteer that still plays rugby for the Bremer County Bucks. Now, they just put another mark on their short history at Newton, Iowa this past Friday. It was the regular season game of the year for the Iowa Youth Rugby Association. This past Friday SE Junior Koby Alpers breaks away for a try (score worth seven points) in Iowa Youth rugby 7's. Alpers has been a main contributor this spring in tackles and scoring for Wolf Creek. Polk (last year's large school champion) was defeated byWolf Creek (last year's small school champion) 28-7. The first half was dominated by Wolf Creek 21-0. Then SE Polk woke up and scored quickly to start thesecond half to make it 21-7. Wolf Creek rallied and put one more score in the try zone to make the final 28-7. Senior Isaiah Vaughan jump cuts against three SE Polk defenders in the nightcap game which feature last year's large school champion SE Polk vs. last year's small school champion Wolf Creek (Union Community). Vaughan is headed to Ellsworth to play college football at this time. In the first game of the night Wolf Creek defeated another large school, Des Moines Hoover 70-0. It concluded the regular season for the Knights and gave thema 11-0-1 overall record heading into next Friday's state championship tournament.
