Teen charged in VSHS bomb threat

     Vinton Police were contacted by officials at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School at 1018 a.m. today, reporting that a handwritten bomb threat had been found in a mens room by a student, who immediately reported it to their teacher.       Vinton-Shellsburg School officials immediately initiated an evacuation of the building, and the Vinton Police Department, with the assistance of the Benton County Sheriff's Office, began their investigation.

Peony owners accused of continued immigration, fraud violations

       A week before they were scheduled to face sentencing on the federal charges of harboring illegal aliens and defrauding the government, Chan Duong and Phung Ca (Polly) Long of Vinton have been accused of continuing to break federal law in the operation of their two Peony restaurants.     No new charges have been filed, according to federal court documents on file in the U.

VSMS ELP students to share lessons on ancient Egypt today

Caitlyn Martin works on a display showing ancient Egyptian medical theories.     There will be a special lesson on the history of ancient Egypt, particularly focusing on medical theories and practices of that era, at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School today.       The ELP students will present their projects from 11 to 1. Members of the public are invited. 

Bolin chose military life over collegiate coaching career

Jay and Susan Bolin's wedding, 2/7/1941.      Jay Bolin was walking along a New York City street one day more than a half-century ago, when a police officer stopped him.      The officer had identified Bolin as the instructor who had taught him how to fire a rifle in the U.S. Army.     Back in the 1940s, Bolin could have meet hundreds of men like that, because he taught firearms to so many young soldiers in so many places.

LEC nearly finished: Officials plan walk-through May 18

The temporary fence surrounding the new LEC has been removed; the building will soon open.      For Benton County Sheriff Randy Forsyth and his staff of deputies and jailers, the nearly three-year challenge of doing their jobs in a small temporary location is nearly over.      The new Benton County Law Enforcement Center is nearly complete. On May 18, county officials plan to make their walk-through and "punch list" of small details to finish before the project is declared complete.

Vinton comprehensive plan: Process began with public meeting Tuesday

     What are the best things about Vinton, and living here?      What are the greatest future challenges and concern for Vinton?      The process of beginning the Vinton comprehensive plan began with a group of 21 local individuals sharing their answers to those questions.      The 2020 Vision for Vinton Committee began the process of making a comprehensive plan with a public meeting led by Chad Sands, a community development specialist with the East Central Iowa Council of Governments.

Tilford second graders share 'Our World of Music'

The students obviously loved singing 'Old Dan Tucker.'      The tradition of elementary school music and ice cream continued Tuesday evening at Tilford Elementary, where the second grade students and music teacher Connie Zenk sang a variety of American songs as well as songs from other parts of the world.      The students began with some patriotic favorites. They sang "America" before reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing "My County, My Flag" and "Grand Old Flag.

Alumni football comes to Vinton; former players invited

     Fifteen members of the recently formed Vinton Shellsburg Alumni   football team held their first practice on Sunday, May 1 at the high   school football practice field.  The focus of this practice is the   upcoming game versus the Center Point Urbana Alumni football team on   Friday July 8 at 7:00 pm in Center Point.
