Rocky returns to Palace as boxing coach in 'Creed'

One need not be proficient in “Rocky” lore to appreciate “Creed,” but for those who have followed the exploits of Sylvester Stallone’s Philadelphia boxer, Ryan Coogler’s latest film pays unexpectedly rich emotional dividends. “Creed” is so reminiscent of the 1976 film that introduced us to Rocky Balboa that I sense newcomers will fall for “Creed”’s characters the way viewers fell for “Rocky”’s 40 years ago.

Second Annual Country Fest set for June 4

Me & Rosie B: Rosie and Tom Bielefeldt, Jeff Mattison and Keith Lindsey. The Second Annual Country Fest will take place Saturday, June 4, 2016, in the grandstands of the Benton County Fairgrounds. As last year, the headlining singers are recording artists who have been making records and touring for decades. This year's singers include Leroy Parnell and Little Texas. And like last year, local bands will perform.

Vinton native Moen celebrates release of first album

Liz Moen and her band will celebrate her debut release Jan. 22 at The Mill in Iowa City. Vinton native and 2012 Vinton-Shellsburg High School graduate Liz Moen is celebrating the release of her first album. She and her band will be playing songs Liz wrote at a party at The Mill in Iowa City on Jan. 22.  "I've been playing covers around Iowa City for some time and finally, this semester I got the courage to be vulnerable and write my own lyrics.

ACT 1 seeks to fill four new roles for 'Rex's Exes'; auditions Jan. 3-4

ACT I is announcing auditions for Rex's Exes. This new comedy the 2nd in the trilogy of the Verdeen cousins. ACT I performed The Red Velvet Cake War in 2014, Rex's Exes is the next in a line of 3 funny comedies. If you recall the story left off with the 3 Verdeen Cousins out smarting Aunt LaMerle and recovering their house and GrandMary's quilt.

Catch this classic Friday, December 18 through Wednesday, December 23 at 7 pm, and Monday, December 21 and Thursday, December 24 at 2 pm. “Victor Frankenstein” is rated PG-13 for macabre images, violence, and a sequence of destruction.

Holiday Double Feature: Act 1 children preparing two Christmas plays

The girl elves celebrate the arrival of a new boy to the North Pole. The ACT 1 children's Christmas presentation takes place this weekend in the Tilford Elementary Auditorium. The double feature includes a play called "A Very Hairy Christmas" which describes a series of mishaps involving Santa's beard. The second show is called "12 Angry Elves," and depicts a jury determining the guilt of an elf accused of stealing Mrs.

'Shrek the Musical:' VSHS students to perform this weekend

Caleb Kruckenberg, Alyssa Bunge and Will Dudley play the leading roles in 'Shrek the Musical.' One of the most popular movies at the Vinton Palace is coming in stage form to the Vinton-Shellsburg High School auditorium this weekend.  "Shrek the Musical" opens at 7 p.m. Friday, with additional performances at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.  Will Dudley plays the famous ogre; Alyssa Bunge is Fiona, the beautiful girl who turns into an ogre at midnight.
