  Turns out the critics don’t know everything – but we knew that, didn’t we? Patrons loved “Safe Haven.” “Identity Thief” opens Friday, March 15 through Thursday, March 21 at 7 pm, and Monday, March 18 at 2 pm. This film, also panned by critics and loved by audiences, is rated R for very crude language and lots of it.

Red Cedar Chamber Music Performs

  Red Cedar Chamber Music brings a concert titled au naturel to Wesley United Methodist Church, 516 2nd Ave, Vinton, IA on Friday, April 26that 7 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the Benton County Historical Society as their annual fundraiser.   This unique program offers listeners seldom-heard duos and trios from the 19th century scored for flute, guitar and natural horn.

In Depth: 'Safe Haven'

The latest Nicholas Sparks offering, “Safe Haven,” plays Friday, March 8 through Thursday, March 14 at 7 pm, and Monday, March 11 at 2 pm. A mysterious young woman (Julianne Hough) arrives in a small North Carolina town.  Her reluctance to join the tight-knit community raises questions about her past. She slowly makes friends, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex (Josh Duhamel), a widowed shopkeeper and father of two.

'Drowsy Chaperone' opening 'well-received'

ACT 1 announced that Sunday's performance of 'Drowsy Chaperone' is nearly sold out. The ACT 1 performance of "Drowsy Chaperone" earned a warm reception from the opening night audience Thursday, says the director.  In the show has been so-well received that the Sunday matinee is already nearly sold out. ACT 1 reports, however, that many seats reman for the Friday and Saturday night performances. "It was a very well received performance by the audience; everything about the performance went very smoothly, just as it was supposed to.

In Depth: After 'Drowsy Chaperone' comes Les Mis to Palace screen

  The Palace will remain closed for movies through Saturday, March 2.  ACT I Assistant Director Doug Martens raised the silver screen last Monday for dress and tech rehearsals in preparation for the four-day run of “The Drowsy Chaperone,” Thursday, February 28 through Sunday, March 3. Patrons of all ages may look forward to this light-hearted musical on the Palace stage.

Cabaret will be held on Sunday

Cabaret will be held on Sunday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m. in the VS-HS Auditorium.  Doors will open at 1:30 p.m.

In Depth: Gangster Squad and Drowsy Chaperone

  The Palace opens with a three-day run of “Gangster Squad” before being closed Monday through Wednesday for rehearsals of ACT I’s “Drowsy Chaperone.” “Gangster Squad” plays Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, February 22 -24 at 7 pm only. Rated R for strong violence and language, this 1940s mob film runs 110 minutes, and features an all-star cast.

'Drowsy Chaperone:' ACT 1 cast members learn dance routine.   Bring the whole family! “Parental Guidance” plays the Palace on Friday, February 15 through Thursday, February 21 at 7 pm, and Monday, February 18 at 2 pm. This very funny, well-written and well-acted comedy about grandparents coming to the realization that they are not the favorites stars Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as the grandparents, and Marisa Tomei, as their estranged daughter.

In Depth - Life of Pi

What astonishes me is how much I love the use of 3-D in "Life of Pi." I've never seen the medium better employed, not even in "Avatar," and although I continue to have doubts about it in general, Lee never uses it for surprises or sensations, but only to deepen the film's sense of places and events. – Roger Ebert  Roger Ebert, avid hater of 3D, gives “Life of PI” 4 out of 4 stars and enthusiastically praises the movie’s storytelling and visual effects.

Despite factual flaws, 'Lincoln' should awaken our interest in history

Monday was a presidential day for me, as I watched President Barack Obama's Second Inauguration before going to the packed Palace to see Lincoln. We arrived early -- just after 1 p.m. -- and watched Marcy and the volunteers looking for empty seats as 2 p.m. approached. Nearly two decades ago, as I was beginning my journalism career, I read just about every book on media that I could find.
