Vinton native Sarah Springer helped design 'Dark Knight Rises' costumes

Sarah Springer, with her mom, Jeannie, helped design costumes for 'Dark Knight Rises.'   The producers of the latest Batman movie wanted to make the cat burglar suit unique from other superhero costumes in other movies. So they asked a Vinton native for help. Sarah Springer, a 2006 Vinton-Shellsburg alum, says the Batman gig was her first real movie job, and for her a big break toward a career in movie costume design.

In Depth - The Dark Knight Rises

  Long-awaited, “The Dark Knight Rises” hits the Palace silver screen Friday, August 17 through Thursday, August 23 at 7 p.m. every night, and in our regular Monday matinee on August 20 at 2 p.m. With a running time of 164 minutes, and PG-13 rating for intense sequences of violence and action, some sensuality and language, this dark and heavy film is not for younger viewers.

In Depth - Ice Age: Continental Drift

  One last flick for the kids before school resumes! “Ice Age: Continental Drift” in 3D opens Friday, August 10 at the Palace, and runs through Thursday, August 16 at 7 p.m. every night, and in matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Monday, and 4 p.m. on Wednesday. This PG-rated movie is perfect for the younger set. The animated “Ice Age 4” runs just 84 minutes and receives its rating due to mild action and peril, and a bit of rude humor.

Reasons to see 'A Midsummer Night's dream'

Puck (Aspen Auld) and First Fairy (Katie Hancock) meet in the opening scene. If you like Shakespeare, you have to go see the ACT 1 production of "A MidSummer Night's Dream." If you don't love Shakespeare, you still ought to go.  I went, on Tuesday, during one of the week's first dress rehearsals for the show that opens tonight (Friday, Aug. 3). It's impressive: The costumes. The actors.

Did you miss me?  I took the week off last week, so no column for “The Amazing Spider-Man.”  Honestly, how many Spider-Mans do we need?  I plead writer’s block.  Fortunately, you do not depend solely on my words of wisdom – the theatre has been packed! In Depth: 'Madagascar 3' and 'That's My Boy'

  The Palace is stacked this weekend with “Madagascar 3” in 3D and the R-rated “That’s My Boy.” Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to New York. Their journey takes them through Europewhere they joina traveling circus, Madagascar style! “Madagascar 3” runs 93 minutes and is rated PG for mild action and some rude humor.
