In Depth: 'Lucky One' and VSHS drama students coming to Palace

  Nicholas Sparks fans rejoice!  (Sorry, Titanic lovers.)  “The Lucky One” plays the Palace Friday, May 11 through Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m., and Monday, May 14 at 2 p.m. Date night, chick flick, full on romance.  Sigh.  A marine named Logan (Zac Efron) is saved when he bends over to pick up a stray photograph.

In Depth: 'Wrath of the Titans' and 'Safe House' bring action to Palace screen

  “Wrath of the Titans 3D” plays the Palace this Friday, May 4 through Thursday, May 10 at 7 p.m., and Monday, May 7 at 2 p.m.   Action adventure movie-goers will enjoy the over-the-top special effects, as well as the many plot twists and turns. “Wrath of the Titans,” sequel to 2010’s “Clash of the Titans” is rated PG-13 and runs 100 minutes.

In Depth: 'Hunger Games' coming next to Vinton Palace

  “The Hunger Games” are here! District 12 tributes, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) enter the arena on Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m.  Palace patrons may catch the show every evening through Thursday, May 3, and Saturday, April 28 and Monday, April 30 at 2 p.m. I must confess to seeing this movie on national opening night! Gerald and I caved to the pleading and gnashing of teeth when we realized we had never exposed Lily and Grace to the “thrills” of a megaplex.

'Capone's Whiskey' tickets still available; showing tonight at Palace

  There are still tickets available for tonight’s special screening of “Capone’s Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye.”  Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets may be purchased at the door, however, patrons are advised to buy in advance (www.vintonpalace.org) or arrive early to ensure seating.  As of Friday morning at 8 am, 128 reservations have been secured for the documentary presentation.

In Depth: Journey 2 and Capone's whiskey

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is a Robinson Crusoe-style movie featuring Josh Hutcherson as Sean (see him in two weeks as Peeta in “The Hunger Games”), Dwayne Johnson as Stepdad Hank, Michael Caine as Grandfather Alex, and of course, Vanessa Hudgens as the lovely Polynesian, Kailani. Sequel to “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (also starring Hutcherson), “Journey 2” opens Friday, April 13 and will play the Palace through Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.

  Dr. Seuss in the House! “The Lorax 3D,” is rated PG, and will cost you $4, not the usual 3. It’s about a community with not one real tree, so should hold vast appeal for Vintonians like me. Come for 95 minutes each evening at seven – you’ll be late if you wait and show up at eleven! There are matinees at two for those patrons who like movies on Saturdays and on Mondays, too.

April 21 concert: VSHS choir members to train, perform with Young Artists

The Simon Estes Foundation’s Young Artist Performance Program will be in residence April 20-21, 2012 in Vinton. Young Artists Shelby VanNordstrand, soprano and Joshua Markley, baritone accompanied by Jodi Goble, piano will perform in recital along with the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Chamber Choir on Saturday April 21 7 p.m. at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School.

'Capone's Whiskey:' Documentary on Iowa-made Templeton Rye coming to Palace

  Modern American Cinema has announced that Kristian Day's Capone's Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye  will be playing at the Palace Theatre.  The showing takes place at 7 p.m. Friday, April 20. Tickets are $7.  Kristian Day’s documentary film chronicles the history of the infamous whiskey cookers of Carroll County, Iowa, from their outlaw days of Prohibition to when the liquor became legal in 2006.
