Benton County Supervisor Notes March 4, 2025

Seventh Week of the 2025 Legislative Session
This week, we were busy at work, passing bills through subcommittees, committees, and the Senate floor before our funnel week deadline. On Wednesday, in the Senate Technology Committee, we passed SF 449 which places consumer protection regulations on digital financial asset transactions kiosks. This bill was a cooperative effort between myself, law enforcement, and prosecutors to help reduce the use of bitcoin ATM's in scamming Iowa out of their money.
STATE AUDITOR ROB SAND CALLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY ON BEHALF OF IOWA TAXPAYERS
Auditor of State Rob Sand today released the fiscal year 2024 Statements of Auditing Standards (SAS) 122 letter, a required document on the internal controls of Iowa’s finances, and a review of its financial integrity. It includes six material weaknesses, three of which relate to Iowa’s school voucher program. A material weakness is a deficiency or combination of deficiencies in internal controls of financial reporting that are significant enough to result in a material misstatement of the entity’s financial integrity. On Thursday, February 27th, both chambers in the Iowa Legislature debated and passed Senate File 418, which makes changes to the Iowa Code for the Civil Rights Act. Governor Kim Reynolds signed the bill into law on Friday.The rights of Iowans need to be protected. Having Gender Identity as a protected class had problems protecting women.
