Benton County Extension Program holds annual Farm Safety Day

Another successful Farm Saftey Day was held last Saturday at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Working with several area organizations, the day brought several workshops for area children to have a little bit of fun while learning safety. The children learned a vast variety of information from hidden hazards around the farm, and things like combine safety, lawn mower safety, ATV, and chemical safety to learning about 911 and what happens when you call.

The sights and sounds of an old car

Saturday afternoon one of the fun events held in Vinton occurred, the car cruise. Yes, I'm sure it's an age thing. Or maybe it's a throwback to the smell of gasoline and the sound of an engine roaring in the garage that brings back a good feeling from childhood. I noted the route of the cruise this year. Drivers were directed to drive past the local nursing homes where the older folks were lined up to enjoy cars from their youth or even childhood.

Vinton-Shellsburg's Tiny Vikes will soon have a new home

A few of the Tiny Vikes assisted with the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction phase of the new "Tiny Vikes Early Learning Center" was held on Thursday afternoon. The Vinton-Shellsburg Superintendent Kyle Koeppen, school board members and staff attended the ceremony. Also in attendance were the current Tiny Vikes who were given their own plastic hats resembling hard hats to wear for the ceremony and tp take home with them.

IOWA GRANT APPLICATIONS SOUGHT FOR NEW STATE CRISIS INTERVENTION PROGRAM

The Iowa Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP) announced today it is now accepting applications for a new State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP).  Grant funding can be used to support a broad range of community activities to address gun and violent crime issues.  Iowa’s SCIP Advisory Board has identified behavioral health as the top priority area for Iowa’s initial round of SCIP funding, with emphasis on youth programming in both rural and urban communities.

Brandon Cowboy Breakfast Feeds over 900

The little town with the big skillet was the site for the annual Cowboy Breakfast in Brandon. If everyone is at home, the town has 341 residents, except on Cowboy Breakfast Sunday. Last weekend the town brought the biscuits and gravy, the pancakes and sausage and all the fixin's for a good old-fashioned breakfast cooked outside for the crowd. Volunteers from the community gathered to pull off the feat with preparation of all the food, setting up, cleaning up and tearing it all down.

Vinton Cruise this Saturday, September 23, 4-6:00 p.m.

Saturday, the annual Vinton Cruise will kick off events beginning at 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. with the Kiddie Cruise on the west side of the courthouse. There is no entry fee to participate. Strollers, tricycles, bicycles, wagons, battery ride toys. Enter at the Ketchen building or John's Tire corners.12-4:00 p.m.Registration and prizes for the cruise will be in front of the courthouse.
