Bear Creek Church's Memorial Day Tradition raises funds to repair church

Bear Creek Church held its annual open house with coffee and rolls for visitors to enjoy as they visited before and after the Memorial Day service. Speaking for the service was John Karrick. The committee in charge of keeping the doors open at the church is taking donations to repair the old building. Originally built in 1921 the building is in need of a roof repair and a new coat of paint.

V-S FFA Teaches the Future at 3rd Ag Day

Andrew Pingenot teaches 3rd graders about rabbits and poultry at 3rd Grade Ag Day. By Co-Reporter, Juliana LuisOn Wednesday, May 3rd, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter assisted with teaching 3rd graders about agriculture. The day included learning about animal safety, machine safety, as well as corn byproducts. Throughout the day the chapter members taught students about poultry, rabbits, swine, and horses. Sophomore Izzie Birker said, “I really enjoyed the opportunity to teach younger kids about animals and animal safety.

Women's Club makes Donation to Little Knights Learning Center

V-S FFA Participates in CDE Contests

Paul Herger, Andrew Pingenot, Alana Fleming, and Jordyn Williams participate in the District Floriculture Contest. By Co-Reporter Izzie Birker On Tuesday, May 16th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members attended the annual District CDE contests at Hawkeye Community College. Teams that went and participated from the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter include Floriculture and Food Science. The Vinton-Shellsburg Floriculture team consisted of Pual Herger, Jordyn Williams, Andrew Pingenot, and Alana Fleming which was awarded 4th place overall with Paul Herger placing 3rd individually.

Mt. Auburn residents gather to remember on Memorial Day Services

The attendees at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery Memorial Day services could be found across the nation in honor of our fallen soldiers. Locally, Mt. Auburn who is now without an official local American Legion of their own, continued the tradition.On Thursday of last week, a group gathered to mark the graves of their soldiers with white crosses and flags. Residents then gathered on Monday for a brief service which included short presentations from residents as well as Taps being played by Chad Newton.

VS FFA Celebrates Another Great Year

Members, their families, and supporters gathered for a meal and fellowship prior to the ceremony in the commons which started with a greeting from President Annabelle Newton and Invocation by Officer at Large Austin Noe.

Veteran of the Month for June: Dick Kenney

Army Veteran, Dick Kenney, Benton County Veteran of the Month Dick Kenney was drafted two weeks before his high school graduation; thankfully, they deferred so he could at least receive his diploma, but he was on a bus the very next morning at 6 am. After completing all of his Army training, he was stationed in Germany as a Combat Engineer from 1953 to 1955. His unit was mainly responsible for building bridges and setting up other infrastructure.

Join us for the Bacon Buddies® Show at the Benton County Fair! WHO: Persons with an intellectual and/or developmental disability age of 8 years and older are eligible. Each participant will be paired with one-two youth mentors and a pig. WHAT: Bacon Buddies® participants will have the opportunity to experience showing a pig. The judge will assess how the mentors, participant and pig work together as a cohesive unit.
