City Council: Drainage, Ditches and Oopsies, Wrong Aggregate

At Thursday night's Council meeting(s) the council heard a couple of requests during their work session. One was to purchase a tiny sliver of land that the city inherited as part of the Braille School acquisition. The city will probably make plans to put that up for sale. During the work session a seven foot ditch that provides storm water drainage located in the right of way at 1605 2nd Avenue was addressed.

Boy Scouts to collect food donations, October 28

On Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22, the Boy Scout Troop and Pack 47 distributed door hangers at residences all over Vinton with instructions for donating to this year's Scouting for Food event. This was a change from prior years where plastic bags were distributed. On Saturday, October 28, Troop and Pack 47 will go around and pick up all bags of donated food/items left out on doorsteps per the instructions on the door hangers.

Annual Veteran's Day Assembly November 10

Vinton-Shellsburg High School’s Student Senate announces its annual community-wide Veterans Day assembly. This assembly will take place November 10th at 9 a.m. in the middle school gym. All community members are invited to attend the assembly and recognize our Veterans. Before the assembly, any and all Veterans, along with their spouses, are invited to enjoy breakfast which will be served in the middle school cafeteria from 8 a.

Shellsburg bridge ribbon cutting November 16

The community of Shellsburg is excited to announce a bridge ribbon cutting ceremony to be held on Thursday, November 16th at 3:30 pm.   The Sells Street bridge has served the community for 108 years and is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Shellsburg is celebrating the opening of the new Smith Street bridge which will provide an improved gateway to the Shellsburg business district.

Before the officer team started the meeting and degree ceremony, there was a delicious potluck catered by the Merchant family with amazing pulled pork, party potatoes and all of the foods the members brought in for the potluck.

Benton County Makes Settlement Agreement with former Deputy

In a "Settlement Agreement and General Release" obtained from the county, forms signed by the Benton County Supervisors address claims for the following:Failure to hireUnequal PayDenied BenefitsHarassmentRetaliatory Harassment.A settlement was made by Heartland Insurance Risk Pool on behalf of the county in the amount of $250,000. Along with the payment the female employee "voluntarily" to resign, and cannote ever work for Benton County again.
