Vinton-Shellsburg Seniors Awarded over $138K in Scholarships

I have no idea how other towns celebrate their graduates, but it feels like Vinton tries to step it up every year. Principal Matt Kingsley opened the Scholarship and Awards Ceremony for the class of 2023 in the high school auditorium It was estimated that there would be $120,000 in scholarships awarded to the graduates.

Governor Reynolds Signs Several Bills into Law

 Today, Governor Kim Reynolds signed the following bills into law:  SF 84: A bill for an act relating to the criminal offenses of sexual exploitation of a minor and stalking committed while utilizing a technological device, the enticement and sexual exploitation of minors and the dissemination of obscene material to minors and the utilization of undercover law enforcement officers or agents posing as minors, and providing penalties.

Brylee Bruce and Jaden Patterson recognized as 2023 Iowa Governor's Scholars

Brylee Bruce of Vinton-Shellsburg High School and Jaden Patterson of Center Point-Urbana High School was recognized by Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg for outstanding academic achievement at the 21st Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony on April 30 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.The statewide program, sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Office, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) ,and its title sponsor the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF), honored 422 high school seniors from across Iowa.

Consumers are Warned of a Vehicle Sales Scam

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Investigation & Identity Protection and Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird are warning the public to be aware of a fraudulent vehicle sales scam.  A criminal entity, using the website https://pettymotors.com/, has been attempting to impersonate Petty Motors, Inc., a licensed and legitimate car dealership in Knoxville, Iowa.

EMS declared an Essential County service

Gary Bierschenk, Hayley Rippel, Cindy Pattee, Mindy Fisher, Anna Demuth, Mark Lint, Ron Tippett, Tracy Seeman The Benton County Board of Supervisors declared emergency medical services to be an essential county service at their regular meeting today with appointments to the advisory council set for next week.This is a huge step moving forward for the future of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Benton Co. In 2021, Governor Reynolds signed legislation SF 615 allowing EMS Departments in Iowa a chance to be declared an essential service putting them on the same level as fire departments and law enforcement across the State.

Fuel up for Summer Fun!

The Free Summer Lunch Program will be serving FREE breakfast and lunch again this summer. Children ages 1-18 are welcome to participate free in the program. No registration or identification is required. Children ages 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Anyone 19 and older may purchase breakfast for $2.00 and lunch for $3.00.At the Shellsburg school, both breakfast and lunch will be served Monday through Thursday.

Century and Heritage Farm Program Applications due June 1

Farm families will be recognized during a ceremony at the Iowa State FairIowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig reminds eligible farm owners to apply for the 2023 Century and Heritage Farm Program through June 1.The program was created by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation to recognize families who have owned their farms for 100 years and 150 years, respectively, and to honor the strength and resiliency of Iowa’s multi-generational farm families.
