Cobb Alley and who was "Cobb"?
It all started when I noticed the impressive changes in Cobb Alley. The Palace Theatre is working to make what was a drab alleyway into an eye-pleasing area. The project is not complete, but the changes already make you take note of the improvements.Located next to the Palace Theatre, the alley is will be named in honor of Aubry "Cobb" Smock who was the motion picture machine operator at the Palace for 39 years as well as a vaudeville performer on the early Palace stage. Bendickson arrested on criminal charges
Shawn Greggory Bendickson, 35, of Vinton, was arrested on three criminal complaints including Second Degree Sexual Abuse a Class B Felony, Lascivious Acts with a Child, solicitation a Class D felony, and Assault With Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse an Aggravated Misdemeanor.Bendickson is accused of abusing a female child, under the age of 12, between January of 2014 through December of 2018 in Blairstown. Reynold and Republican Candidates make stop in Vinton
Governor Reynolds and other Republican Iowa candidates pulled into Vinton aboard Reynold's campaign bus on Tuesday afternoon. Amidst all of the usual talking points that one would expect from those on the Republican ticket, the candidates didn't fail to hit all of the hot buttons.Several area residents stood outside to listen as the candidates spoke and cheered on the Governor. Each year Northeast District and Iowa FFA officers plan and facilitate Greenhand Fire Up Conferences for FFA members in the Northeast district. Waverly Shell-Rock welcomed FFA chapters from all over the Northeast district on October 17th.While at Waverly Shell-Rock, district and state officers lead four interactive workshops for first year high school FFA members, also known as Greenhands, for the annual Greenhand Fire Up Conference. Last century, a letter ran in the newspaper supporting then-candidate David Thompson for the Benton County Attorney position. Sometimes we've made statements that no longer ring true today. That was true for one "then supporter" of Thompson.When running a campaign, it might do well to get permission from folks who signed their name on a document before republishing it decades later as an endorsement. Halloween night pulls out the stops for area children
Halloween night brought all of the families out for the evening. With stops at local nursing homes, and several of the area churches, kids were about to not only find candy but hot dogs, chips, and they could even make smores. The Tree of Lights is our major annual fundraising campaign and has been for over 25 years. Funds raised from the Tree of Lights supports the healthcare needs of the people who utilize the services of Virginia Gay Hospital and our clinics in Atkins, Van Horne, Vinton, and Urbana. People have the opportunity to purchase various lights or ornaments in memory of or in honor of anyone of their choosing.

HOT Grant Applications now being Accepted
In 2017, the voters of Vinton passed a ballot measure to establish a 7% hotel/motel tax within the City limits. The tax went into effect on July 1, 2018. Per the Code of Iowa, funds collected must be spent on recreation, convention, cultural or entertainment facilities. Vinton Unlimited has established the Vinton Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) Grant program to provide financial support to local organizations for community events, cultural and recreational programming, tourism and various other projects.
