Area Families Compete and Win at Cattle Congress

Angie Wittmer's Best of Show entry at Cattle Congress this year. At least three area women competed in the Cattle Congress art competition and came home with ribbons. Cattle Congress is another fair held in the Cedar Valley out of Waterloo each year. Beginning in 1910 Cattle Congress it brings folks from across the nation to compete in the dairy cattle completion. Both Barb Campbell and Angie Wittmer came home with Best of Show ribbons with their entries.

Local Scouts to deliver Scouting for Food bags on Saturday

The Scouts will be out this coming Saturday to put Scouting for Food bags on doors.  They will be out starting at 9 am.Bag pick up will be on October 8th starting at 9 am. If anyone does not get a red bag, a regular grocery bag can be placed outside and the Scouts will pick it up.

Members of the Vinton FFA Chapter Learn About the Utter Importance of Dairy!

FFA members walk around judging the dairy cattle, preparing their reasons for the scores they gave By: Co-Reporter, Alana FlemingOn Thursday, September 15th, members from the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter went to the Tri-State Dairy contest in Calmar to test their knowledge about different dairy aspects. Some members went to a dairy cattle judging contest, while others were in dairy products. Christopher Fleming, Kail Evans, Will McKenna, and Clayton McKenna started with the dairy cattle judging.

Phippen talks RAGBRAI

Matt Phippen spoke to the local Kiwanis group on Tuesday about the planning that goes into organizing the logistics of RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) as well as the experiences he had on the ride this year. Phippen came into the organization following a 23-year career at Scheels. He shared that throughout the years he had turned down several opportunities to work outside the state, but he wanted to stay in Iowa.

Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW Auxiliary remember POW/MIA

Area Veterans and their spouses took a few minutes out of their lives to remember those veterans who didn't return from war. A short ceremony was held to recognize the soldiers who became a Prisoner of War or those Missing In Action that never returned.The ceremony was hosted by the local VFW Post 8884 on Friday, September 16, POW/MIA Recognition Day.

It's Stocktober!

The Friends of the Center Point Library is inviting people to help stock the Andersen Center Point Library HACAP Food Pantry. Needs include personal care items like shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and baby care items during October.   Friends will have a Stocktober collection site by the computers in the main library.  The help-yourself food pantry is inside the library's north, State Street, entrance.

Brochures Promote Vinton Tourism

Vinton Unlimited is proud to present to the town a set of new brochures that promote some of the highlights of Vinton. Included in the new set of brochures is the Harvest of Walls. This is a walking tour of the historical murals throughout the downtown area. Each of the 10 murals is included in the brochure along with a short history of the painting.

Shellsburg Couple Arrested on Charges of Sexual Abuse and Child Endangerment

The Benton County Sheriff's department made two arrests last week of Jeffrey and Stacy Diveley of Shellsburg. JEFFREY SCOTT DIVELEY was charged with a total of 10 charges in several accounts involving sexual abuse of children. He was charged with two counts each of:SEXUAL ABUSE IN THE SECOND DEGREE, CLASS B FELONY 709.3(1)(b)709.3 Sexual abuse in the second degree.
