Boomtown Saturday, August 27

An earth-shaking pyrotechnic experience you will not soon forget! Don't miss this fireworks display from the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association, it's known as the best fireworks in the Midwest! Rain or shine!All of the fun will kick off for Boomtown at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27 at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Entrance to the fairgrounds is $5 per person walk/in.

Dwight and Bonnie Sanders Inducted Posthumously into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame

Dwight and Bonnie Sanders, formerly of Benton County, were inducted into the 2022 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 21. Ninety-eight counties selected 133 inductees for outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees, or their surviving family members, were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation President, Julie McGonegle, and State 4-H Program Leader, Debbie Nistler.

VS FFA Members Shine at the Iowa State Fair

Evan Lopata shows off his Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons. The Iowa State Fair was held in Des Moines August 11th-21st. New foods, games, and exhibiting opportunities attracted many to attend; including some of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members. Throughout the fair, members showed off their SAE projects, lent a helping hand whenever possible, and overall had a good time while they were at it. Many accomplishments were awarded to them as a result.

Bruce places 1st in the lamb 2022 Iowa Farm Bureau Cookout Contest

After the wood fired flames extinguished along the Iowa State Fair’s Grand Concourse, Steve Heaberlin of Warren County was crowned the 2022 Iowa Farm Bureau ‘Cookout Champion’ of the 58th annual cookout contest at the Iowa State Fair. Heaberlin’s coffee-rubbed smoked beef ribs were voted as the championship-winning dish among dozens of qualifiers from around the state at the Farm Bureau Day tradition.

Vinton-Shellburg 2022-23 School Year now in Session

As students arrived at Tilford Elementary for their first day of school, you wouldn't have known for most that they had been gone for the summer. Many picked up where they left off greeting each other and the teachers in the hall. Some looked a bit apprehensive but so did some of the parents. There were last minute payments being dropped off for lunches and last minute registrations.

Izaak Walton Red Cedar Chapter is seeking your input

The Izaak Walton Red Cedar Chapter is hosting an evening of brainstorming and input from the community and current members. The chapter is seeking ideas pertaining to past or future events and other community outreach programs. A meeting will be held on the evening of August 30th, 2022 at 7 pm at the IWLA clubhouse in Vinton. The ultimate goal is to fill an upcoming 2023 calendar marking future events.

Happel family first to finish 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 books and counting! 1,000 a number that pre-schoolers can't comprehend quite yet. But that is the number of books that this family has read in an attempt to read that many books before the first day of Kindergarten. The challenge was issued by the Vinton Public Library. The library provides a folder with pages that have stars that are crossed off as the family finished each book.

Rollinger to perform with Nat'l FFA Band at 2022 Nat'l FFA Convention & Expo

Rachel Rollinger, a member of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter in Vinton, Iowa will be on stage and in the spotlight Oct. 26-29 during the 2022 National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. Rollinger, a Junior and the daughter of Jeff and Susan Rollinger, has been selected to play Bass Clarinet in the National FFA Band.
