The collection makes accessible to the public the personal accounts of American war veterans to memorialize their stories for generations to come.

The latest Honor Flight included three women who served our country. Rita Curtis, Debra Lee, and local veteran, Carole Daniel. Daniel a 1958 graduate of Washington High School in Vinton, served in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962 as part of the Air Weather Service. All three women were added to the Military Women's Memorial Registry located at Memorial Ave & Schley Drive in Arlington, Virginia.
FFA - November 8th, 2022 2:13 pm

By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke On Saturday, October 22nd, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held its second annual Feed the Farmers event. Members began setting up at their locations around 10 A.M. and served until 2 P.M. Members set up stations at both the Tama-Benton Co-op and the Shellsburg Elevator. The Chapter prepared a lunch that consisted of a Hamburger, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Chips, a Cookie, and Water.

A few years ago, before COVID, the Cottage Garden Society was considering how we could contribute some beauty to the community. Several projects were considered, but we voted to make our first offer to the Evergreen Cemetery Board. A committee of Jeanne Mann, Cindy Elwick, Ann Jorgensen, and Marca Hite met and considered several ideas. Ultimately, the idea of an armillary on a concrete pedestal was agreed upon wit the cemetery board.

In 1972 Hope Rogers of Vinton, Iowa, was elected Benton County's first (and only thus far) woman supervisor. Many thought that it was a fluke, until Hope was re-elected in 1976. According to Hope's daughter Mary, her mother worked very hard! "We never campaigned in Vinton, which is why she flew under the radar. My goodness, that was 50 years ago.

The trial scheduled to begin on Monday for Tacoa Talley, in the murder of Jodie Bevans has been rescheduled until February 6, 2023.The order was issued on Friday after Talley's attorney, Aaron Hawbreaker filed motions to wave the request for a speedy trial and for the continuance late Thursday afternoon. Judge Chad Kepros issued the change after Hawbreaker requested more time to prepare for the defense.

It all started when I noticed the impressive changes in Cobb Alley. The Palace Theatre is working to make what was a drab alleyway into an eye-pleasing area. The project is not complete, but the changes already make you take note of the improvements.Located next to the Palace Theatre, the alley is will be named in honor of Aubry "Cobb" Smock who was the motion picture machine operator at the Palace for 39 years as well as a vaudeville performer on the early Palace stage.

Shawn Greggory Bendickson, 35, of Vinton, was arrested on three criminal complaints including Second Degree Sexual Abuse a Class B Felony, Lascivious Acts with a Child, solicitation a Class D felony, and Assault With Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse an Aggravated Misdemeanor.Bendickson is accused of abusing a female child, under the age of 12, between January of 2014 through December of 2018 in Blairstown.
