Cottage Garden Society Donates a Sculpture to Evergreen Cemetery

Cindy Elwick, Stan Geiken, Bill Strouf, Jeanne Mann and Ted Mann stand next to the armillary installed at Evergreen Cemetery. A few years ago, before COVID, the Cottage Garden Society was considering how we could contribute some beauty to the community. Several projects were considered, but we voted to make our first offer to the Evergreen Cemetery Board. A committee of Jeanne Mann, Cindy Elwick, Ann Jorgensen, and Marca Hite met and considered several ideas. Ultimately, the idea of an armillary on a concrete pedestal was agreed upon wit the cemetery board.

1st & Only Woman Supervisor celebrates 50th Election Anniversary, Endorses Lough

Tony, Mary & Hope Rogers in 1972, still involved in politics  In 1972 Hope Rogers of Vinton, Iowa, was elected Benton County's first (and only thus far) woman supervisor. Many thought that it was a fluke, until Hope was re-elected in 1976. According to Hope's daughter Mary, her mother worked very hard! "We never campaigned in Vinton, which is why she flew under the radar. My goodness, that was 50 years ago.

Murder Trial postponed until February 6, 2023

The trial scheduled to begin on Monday for Tacoa Talley, in the murder of Jodie Bevans has been rescheduled until February 6, 2023.The order was issued on Friday after Talley's attorney, Aaron Hawbreaker filed motions to wave the request for a speedy trial and for the continuance late Thursday afternoon. Judge Chad Kepros issued the change after Hawbreaker requested more time to prepare for the defense.

Cobb Alley and who was "Cobb"?

It all started when I noticed the impressive changes in Cobb Alley. The Palace Theatre is working to make what was a drab alleyway into an eye-pleasing area. The project is not complete, but the changes already make you take note of the improvements.Located next to the Palace Theatre, the alley is will be named in honor of Aubry "Cobb" Smock who was the motion picture machine operator at the Palace for 39 years as well as a vaudeville performer on the early Palace stage.

Bendickson arrested on criminal charges

Shawn Greggory Bendickson Shawn Greggory Bendickson, 35, of Vinton, was arrested on three criminal complaints including Second Degree Sexual Abuse a Class B Felony,  Lascivious Acts with a Child, solicitation a Class D felony, and Assault With Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse an Aggravated Misdemeanor.Bendickson is accused of abusing a female child, under the age of 12, between January of 2014 through December of 2018 in Blairstown.

Reynold and Republican Candidates make stop in Vinton

Governor Reynolds and other Republican Iowa candidates pulled into Vinton aboard Reynold's campaign bus on Tuesday afternoon. Amidst all of the usual talking points that one would expect from those on the Republican ticket, the candidates didn't fail to hit all of the hot buttons.Several area residents stood outside to listen as the candidates spoke and cheered on the Governor.

Virginia Gay Hospital Health Care Foundation celebrated those in our community who have made significant impacts in philanthropy, service, and support of VGH at the 2nd Annual Legacy Honors Awards ceremony. FFA Members Attend District Conference

FFA Members celebrate a fun day at Greenhand Fire-Up Each year Northeast District and Iowa FFA officers plan and facilitate Greenhand Fire Up Conferences for FFA members in the Northeast district. Waverly Shell-Rock welcomed FFA chapters from all over the Northeast district on October 17th.While at Waverly Shell-Rock, district and state officers lead four interactive workshops for first year high school FFA members, also known as Greenhands, for the annual Greenhand Fire Up Conference.

Documents from the last century don't always age well

Last century, a letter ran in the newspaper supporting then-candidate David Thompson for the Benton County Attorney position. Sometimes we've made statements that no longer ring true today. That was true for one "then supporter" of Thompson.When running a campaign, it might do well to get permission from folks who signed their name on a document before republishing it decades later as an endorsement.

Halloween night pulls out the stops for area children

Halloween night brought all of the families out for the evening. With stops at local nursing homes, and several of the area churches, kids were about to not only find candy but hot dogs, chips, and they could even make smores. Several neighborhoods were buzzing with families making their way to the homes in Vinton as well. For more pictures, click HERE.
