V-S FFA Travels to National Convention

Philip Kalina received his American FFA Degree, becoming the 40th VS FFA member to do so.  By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke From October 26th to October 29th, 20 members of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter traveled to the 95th Annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Senior member Josh Wiley was also selected to travel on behalf of Iowa FFA as a delegate and Junior member Rachel Rollinger was selected to participate in the National FFA Band.

Clipper Corner makes donation to Gifts of Hope

Mary Barkdoll and Jessica Davis of Clipper Corner donated $2030 to Gifts of Hope through their annual fundraiser. VGH is grateful for their support and continued support in raising awareness for breast cancer awareness and early detection. VGH is honored to show appreciation at our recent Legacy Awards event in her efforts and raising thousands of dollars over the years.

Vinton-Shellsburg pulls out all the stops for Veterans

Dennis Miller is presented a check by Kelly Steffen for the AMVETS Hands down the Veteran's Assembly is the best event put together by the Vinton-Shellburg Schools each November 11. Held in the Washington Middle School the school pulls out all of the stops for area veterans. Each student in the district attends as well as their teachers. Area veterans that want to attend, along with their families, are all welcome to join the schoolchildren in the middle school gymnasium.

Not pictured: LeeAnne Lubbock     A junior at the Vinton-Shellsburg high school has recently been receiving treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. Despite having stage-four cancer, this high school student, Brittany Steinberg, continues to excel in her classes and be the bright, passionate, and positive student she is. “It’s just a case of bad luck,” Brittany says about her cancer.

This is for the kids: NEW Riverside Park Equipment is in the works!

At Thursday night's council meeting, Matt Boggess of Vinton Parks & Rec reported on a bid received for the new replacement playground equipment for Riverside Park. The former equipment was vandalized back in May. The new replacement equipment is slated to arrive and be installed in late March or early April.After searching for vendors that could provide new playground equipment, only one vendor could meet the criteria.

Veteran's History Project a Grassroots Project

Q: Can you tell us about the Veterans History Project? A: The Veterans History Project is a collection of oral histories curated and archived at the Library of Congress American Folklife Center. The collection makes accessible to the public the personal accounts of American war veterans to memorialize their stories for generations to come.

Lions Club makes Booster & Cross Country Team Donation at Meeting

Vinton Lions Club thanks everyone who supports our trailer sales during the year. Because of this patronage, the club is able to contribute to the Vinton Shellsburg Boosters with a $3500 check made possible by sales at the home football games. Carole O'Deen Daniel A2C inducted into the Military Women's Memorial Registry

The latest Honor Flight included three women who served our country. Rita Curtis, Debra Lee, and local veteran, Carole Daniel. Daniel a 1958 graduate of Washington High School in Vinton, served in the United States Air Force from 1958-1962 as part of the Air Weather Service. All three women were added to the Military Women's Memorial Registry located at Memorial Ave & Schley Drive in Arlington, Virginia.

V-S FFA Shows Appreciation to Farmers

By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke On Saturday, October 22nd, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held its second annual Feed the Farmers event. Members began setting up at their locations around 10 A.M. and served until 2 P.M. Members set up stations at both the Tama-Benton Co-op and the Shellsburg Elevator. The Chapter prepared a lunch that consisted of a Hamburger, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Chips, a Cookie, and Water.
