Christianson Moves on from Grader things

Back when Jimmy Carter was president a man joined the Benton County Secondary Roads Department. Larry Christianson joined the Benton County crew in June of 1978 driving one of those big rigs known as a maintainer. He finally parked his machine for the last time in September of 2021.Larry has a son and daughter and is the husband of Deb. Previously he did a stint in the United States Army, worked on a farm and later at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids.

Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter Feeds the Farmers

By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke On Saturday October 9th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter gave meals to farmers at the Shellsburg Elevator. The chapter gathered in Shellsburg at 10 A.M. on Saturday to begin preparing the meals. The meals included a pulled pork sandwich donated by the Benton County Pork Producers, a cookie, a bag of chips, and their choice of a drink.

Angel Tree in need of a building and taking applications for Children in need

Angel Tree is once again looking for a building to host in. It needs to be one level. If you know of a building please let LaNette or Sarah Parker know. Any suggestions or ideas are welcome at this point. Also, beginning November 1st, you can sign your kids up for the Angel Tree program, if you need assistance. We anticipate helping a lot of families this year so don't delay signing up.

Local Greenhand Fire Up

This event is specifically for the new members of our chapter, but all members are encouraged to help plan the event so they can influence the future of the chapter. Eight first-year members participated, while the officer team and other members of the Personal Growth Committee joined.

Vinton Noon Kiwanis install Officers for the 2021-2022 year

Vinton Kiwanis installed officers for the 2021-2022 year at Tuesday's weekly meeting The Vinton Noon Kiwanis met at Pizza Ranch on Tuesday for their regular meeting. Four Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Members To Receive American Degrees

By: Co-Reporter, Isabel MullinexThe Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter proudly announces that George Haefner, Shelby McDonald, Maddie Moen, and Isaac Wiley will be receiving their American Degrees at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. The American Degree is the highest and most honored award to be received as an FFA member. To be eligible for this outstanding achievement, one must have received a State FFA Degree, hold an active membership for the past three years, completed classroom instruction, and have an outstanding SAE.

Two vehicle accident on Hwy 218 on Tuesday morning

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Hwy 218 south of Vinton at the intersection of 63rd St. and 24th Ave. Two pickups collided and landed in the southeast corner ditch of the intersection. There is no further information about the occupants of the vehicles at this time.Vinton Fire Department responded to the call along with the Benton County Sheriff's Department and the North Benton County Ambulance.

It is time once again to place your order for your Christmas wreaths or roping to decorate your home or business for the Christmas season. The deadline to order is October 30.

Once again Vinton Fire Department serves the community

Vinton Fire Department served area residents breakfast on Sunday morning The Vinton Fire Department held their annual breakfast wrapping up Fire Prevention week. Serving pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage and biscuits and gravy, juice, milk and coffee, there was a line out the door most of the time keeping the department on their toes. On Sunday they were able to serve nearly 900 people at their breakfast.This week the department has gone above and beyond to educate the children in the community about fire safety in both a serious way and giving the children a bit of fun mixed in.

Vinton Fire Department gives Vinton-Shellsburg Students Fire truck rides

V-S Elementary students enjoy the traditional fire truck ride wrapping up Fire Prevention Week. I'm sure many of us remember the time that we got to ride on the fire truck as a child. That was the highlight of our little lives up until that point.  It was also for the Vinton-Shellburg Elementary students on Thursday. The first round of fire trucks to take off included five trucks one of which was the Pink Heals pink fire truck. Altogether the department gave around a dozen truck rides to the kids.
