The Benton County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, is sharing tips for how individuals can maximize their charitable giving tax advantages for 2021 before year end. The CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act) was enacted in 2020 to allow taxpayers who do not itemize their taxes to receive a tax benefit for charitable giving up to a certain threshold.

It used to be when I was younger that I tensed up whenever I saw a group of bikers roll up wherever I was. Then I met a few bikers and realized that the noise of the bikes only indicates that regular people just like noisy bikes. This Saturday as I watched the bikers get ready to ride out to raise some cash for our Special Olympics team that I felt my heart get a little bigger as the roar of the machines were preparing to take off.

The Blue Creek Springtime Monarchs (Benton County chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation) held the annual JAKES Day on Saturday, at the Izaak Walton facility north of Vinton. Kids age 17 and under were taught about wildlife, courtesy of Benton County Conservation. The area VFW Post 8884 presented a check to the Vinton-Shellsburg Trap Team, known as the Red Cedar Shooters. The VFW Post, held a breakfast to raise funds to help the area students purchase necessary equipment and supplies for the area chapter.The Red Cedar Shooters Vinton-Shellsburg Trap Team is for students in grades 6-12 attending the Vinton-Shellsburg School district.

By Clark KauffmanAn eastern Iowa attorney is facing a possible revocation of his law license for allegedly misappropriating client funds and neglecting clients' legal matters.The Iowa Supreme Court Attorney Disciplinary Board has charged attorney John Karl Fischer, of the Fischer Law Firm in Vinton, with more than a dozen ethics-rule violations. The Grievance Commission of the Supreme Court of Iowa conducted a hearing on the matter and recently recommended to the court that Fischer's license be revoked.

This year the Vinton Kiwanis and Lions Clubs welcomed the new teachers who will begin teaching at the Vinton Shellsburg School District.Keith Ervin opened the meeting with the pledge of allegiance and the singing of God bless America.
